Job Description

The Manager of Technical Publications will ensure the quality, accuracy, consistency, and compliance of technical documents with relevant standards and regulations. This role involves coordinating with stakeholders, managing a team of technical writers, and overseeing the production of various technical documents. Responsibilities include resource allocation, conducting team meetings, providing effort estimations, and ensuring adherence to financial and budgetary guidelines for projects. The manager will also be involved in employee management, including performance evaluations, training, and development. This position requires monitoring project performance, identifying risks, and implementing publication strategies to align with organizational goals.
Must have:
  • Minimum 3-5 years management experience in Technical Publications
  • Minimum 8-10 years experience in technical writing or publication
Good to have:
  • Experience working with global and multi-cultural teams

About This Role

                                                                                                         

The ideal candidate will be ensuring the quality, accuracy, consistency, and compliancy of technical documents with relevant standards, regulations, and best practices. The person will also coordinate with stakeholders, such as engineers, product/project managers, and customers, to gather information, feedback, and requirements for technical publications.

Publication Management

  • Manage a team of technical writers and technical publication specialists who produce/prepare technical documents, such as operation and maintenance manuals, user guides, plans, test documents, Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETP), etc.
  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, consistency, and compliance of technical documents with relevant standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, such as SME(s), project/product managers, and customers, to gather information, feedback, and requirements for technical publications.
  • Identify and assign resources required to ensure all project commitments are met.
  • Conduct team meetings to discuss team-related topics, provide priorities, and information.
  • Participate in weekly leader meetings.
  • Responsible for providing estimated level of effort during bids process.
  • Responsible for completing the compliancy requirements for Technical Publications in the requirements tool.
  • Responsible for ensuring governance of the financials and budgets of the Technical Publication projects and tracking variances.
  • Responsible for developing the talent pipeline:
    • Lead all employee management activities, such as performance evaluation via the process in place, annual salary review, training, coaching, and development plans.
    • Provide hiring recommendations, conduct interviews, as required.
  • Review Employees survey metrics and ensure alignment to objectives.
  • Responsible for monitoring cost, schedule, scope, and quality of the assigned projects.
  • Review and approve all budget allocations for all projects.
  • Ensure conformance to all IP management rules and guidelines by team members.
  • Work with Project Managers to identify and evaluate project risks, issues, mitigation, and identify and maximize return from opportunities.
  • Resolve project work/scheduling problems by reprioritizing activities and working collaboratively with Project Managers.
  • Review project performance against milestones and budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with project standards/requirements and CAE policies / processes.
  • Work with other Global Technical Publications business units (Germany, USA, Australia) to ensure that best practices are leveraged.
  • Develop and implement publication strategies, policies, and guidelines to align with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Research and stay updated on the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in technical communication and publication.
  • Identify opportunities for publication innovation and improvements.

Key knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information in a clear, concise, and engaging manner.
  • Strong leadership, management, and organizational skills, with the ability to motivate, mentor, and supervise a team of Technical Writers and Specialists.
  • Proficient in various publication tools, software, and platforms, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, S1000D XML Arbortext Editor, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of financials and OKRs, reporting project status to senior management.
  • Knowledgeable in various publication standards, formats, and styles, such as, C-01-100-100/AG-006/005) standards, S1000D Issues 3.0 to 5.0, DEF (Aust) 5629B, and US MIL STDs, etc.
  • Creative, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to generate innovative and effective publication solutions.
  • Detail-oriented, quality-focused, and customer-oriented, with the ability to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and relevance of technical publications.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and collaborative, with the ability to work as part of a team, under pressure and with changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Passion for technology, innovation, and continuous learning.

Education/ Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, technical communication, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ management experience in Technical Publications.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in technical writing, editing, or publication in a high technology field.
  • Experience working with global and multi-cultural teams is a plus.
