Responsibilities include leading the design and build of a research portal using modern web and mobile technologies, managing UI engineering teams, designing technical implementations, acting as a hands-on engineer and architect, managing client relationships, contributing to business development by creating pitches, and strengthening the UI engineering community within Lab49. The position requires a strong understanding of industry trends, excellent leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Must have:

The Principal Tech Lead will play a critical leadership role on a key project for a strategic new Lab49 client. Working in a collaborative cross functional project team, with direct client-facing interactions, you will have an opportunity to lead a team of engineers and build modern digital products for buy side research analysts and portfolio managers. You will report to the Interactive Practice Head, and work shoulder-to-shoulder with Product and UX experts from Lab49. In addition to the Lab49 project team, you will collaborate with client product and engineering stakeholders to guide the build phase of an exciting new initiative. 

What you’ll be doing: 

    • Partnering with our client to lead the design and build of a research portal using modern web and mobile development technology and techniques. You will be responsible for managing a team of UI engineers, and the relationships with other key contributors to deliver great software.  
    • Design, document, and plan for the technical implementation and delivery of working software into production.  
    • Act as a hands-on engineer and architect to support ongoing project work. Lead and actively participate in projects, serving as a role model for project teams and collaborating with other practices to ensure successful outcomes. 
    • Partner with client counterparts and stakeholders to maintain and build relationships, maintaining a commercial approach. Develop strong relationships with clients as a strategic partner and technical advisor, contributing to expanding our footprint and securing follow-on work. 
    • Partner with the Lab49 business development team to create and deliver compelling pitches, defining problems, captivating clients, presenting solutions, and working out engagement terms. Build and reinforce your professional network through active engagement in industry events and public speaking opportunities. 
    • Contribute to the Interactive Practice: The UI engineering team within Lab49. This means bringing your passion and opinionated view of what makes for great UI development to the wider UI engineering community within Lab49. 
    • Assist in developing effective management skills and practices among line managers in the Engineering practice, fostering strategic career planning and development for the engineering team as a whole.  

What you should have: 

    • 10+ years of hands-on experience designing and building complex, commercial-grade software applications, with 5+ years leading Agile teams. 
    • A primary engineering skillset focused on user interface & mobile. 
    • Proven track record in effective leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making. 
    • Experience designing holistic technical solutions, managing integrations with third party services and APIs, and deploying applications into production.  
    • Experience managing project teams and interacting with clients in finance, consulting, or start-up environments. 
    • A passion for technology and innovation, staying informed about the latest industry trends through active participation in industry events, meet-ups, and more. 
    • Experience with JavaScript and TypeScript, with modern frameworks specifically React although experience with similar frameworks is welcome (e.g., Angular, Vue, or others). 
    • Experience with one or more cloud platforms with a working understanding of contemporary SDLC practices such as continuous delivery. 
    • Strong understanding of the value of testing, quality, continuous integration, source control, and code reviews. 
    • Experience in capital markets, financial markets/products, consulting is highly desirable.

Bonus points:

    • Experience working in asset management, specifically buy side firms. Exposure to research workflows and technology is highly desired. 
    • Backend engineering experience, ideally with .NET, Java, and/or Python. 
    • Experience working with common financial products such as Bloomberg, Symphony, or other tools commonly used in a finance context such as Salesforce, Databricks, and others.

Workplace Expectations 
At Lab49, we prioritize close collaboration — with each other and with our clients. For this role, we expect a presence of at least 3–4 days per week on-site with clients in Boston. In addition, regular travel to client offices outside Boston is possible. We believe that consistent in-person engagement helps build strong partnerships, drives better outcomes, and accelerates growth and innovation. 

The base salary range for this role is $170,000 - $210,000. Placement within the range provided above is based on the individual’s relevant experience and skills for the role and level.
