Microsoft's Linux Systems Group seeks a talented Linux Kernel Engineer to contribute to the development of next-generation technologies for private and public cloud infrastructures. This role involves collaborating with internal and external partners, contributing to upstream open-source projects, and developing cutting-edge accelerations and optimizations. Responsibilities include triaging, debugging, and fixing Linux kernel bugs, kernel development, feature validation, and working within the upstream Linux kernel community. The position requires on-call duties with weekday time off as compensation. This is a chance to impact millions of customers and work on large-scale enterprise issues.

The Linux Systems Group is building the Linux based technologies at Microsoft, and we are looking for a talented Linux Kernel Engineer to join our team. If you are interested in working on Linux at Microsoft, this is the job for you!

Our team plays a key leadership role in Azure by driving Linux and open-source technologies, solutions, and strategy. In this role, you will work closely with internal and external partners, coordinate design and coding across multiple projects, and interact with teams in disparate geographic locations. You will work closely with upstream open-source projects, representing Microsoft as a strong community partner and contributor. You will be developing cutting edge accelerations and optimizations to power future public and private clouds. You will define and push the limits of innovative technologies -- working with the latest hardware, the largest servers, and even larger data centers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop kernel-level code
  • Ability to triage, debug, and fix Linux kernel issues discovered in test and production environments
  • Experience using core Linux command line utilities and managing code with git

 

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with open-source communities. Upstream Linux kernel contributions are a plus.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • Linux kernel debugging tools, such as crash or drgn
    • Modern tracing tools based on eBPF
    • Linux kernel security - reactive response and proactive development
    • Device drivers
    • Experience in C, Bash, Python, and/or Rust

 

Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $81,900 - $160,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $105,600 - $174,600 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Triaging, debugging, and fixing Linux kernel bugs seen in production.
  • Linux kernel development, including aspects of feature validation.
  • Working within the upstream Linux kernel community to contribute and review patches.
  • Rotation in a live site operations virtual team with on-call duties (split between a primary and backup role) from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM PST.
  • On-call requirements that impact off-hours (nights/weekends) will be offset with weekday time off.
