The Hardware Technical Program Manager II at Microsoft will lead the end-to-end product development of infrastructure hardware and multi-source programs at scale, impacting the Azure business. This role involves collaborating with internal and external teams (OEMs, ODMs, suppliers) to deliver high-quality products. Responsibilities include leading virtual teams, aligning stakeholders, managing projects to milestones, collaborating with development partners, understanding technical requirements, managing product specifications and BOMs, overseeing testing, monitoring performance, and communicating effectively with senior management. The ideal candidate will have experience in hardware engineering, program management, and working with external suppliers.

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow, the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Hardware, Infrastructure Management, and Fundamentals Engineering (HIFE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware development, manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

 

We are looking for an Hardware Technical Program Manager II to join the team. The Hardware Technical Program Manager will play a pivotal role in E2E product development of infrastructure hardware and multi-source programs at scale, that have a significant impact on the Azure business.  The candidate will collaborate with both internal Microsoft teams and external partners (OEMs, ODMs, suppliers, partners and others) to drive delivery of high-quality products to our fleet, enabling business success at scale.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree AND 2+ years experience in hardware engineering, hardware product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • 1+ year(s) experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

  • Proficiency in project management tools such as Microsoft Project. 
  • Experience working with external suppliers and ODMs 

Other Requirements:

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience AND 4+ years experience in engineering, product/technical program management or product development
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.
  • Ability to partner closely with cross-functional teams to define, prioritize, and implement features, infrastructure, processes, and workflows. 
  • Ability to create and operationalize processes to transform the effectiveness of the organization with respect to meeting business goals. Coach, enable and grow Program Managers within the team and our partners. 
  • Can align key stakeholders, and manage projects through milestones to completion on schedule and within budget 
  • Ability to monitor and measure engineering impact and performance results by tracking key performance indicators.
  • Proficient in technical design, problem solving, debugging and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in shipping high quality products and services.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, assess opportunities and develop principles to prioritize multiple strategic and tactical options, and drive issues to closure with a high bar on quality.
  • Proven ability to work and collaborate with a wide range of business stakeholders to achieve results and impact.
  • Presentation skills with a high degree of comfort with both large and small audiences (Senior Executives, Technology management, etc.)
  • Supplier management experience.

Technical Program Management IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a virtual team of functional members from hardware and software engineering, sourcing, supply chain, networking and datacenter operations for documenting a Plan-of-Record (POR) for new product development and leading the project team to meet stated milestones.
  • Align key stakeholders and manage projects through milestones to completion on schedule and in budget, with uncompromising quality.
  • Collaborate with internal and external technology development partners to form a cohesive development plan.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the product technical requirements, milestones, deliverables and interdependencies for establishing an accurate and effective project infrastructure.
  • Leverage experience and engineering skills to solve problems, fill gaps and achieve objectives through a cross functional team.
  • Write product specifications, manage product BOM, releases and engineering builds.
  • Manage design verification testing and drive bugs to closure.
  • Monitor and measure engineering impact and performance results by tracking key performance indicators.
  • Responsible for effective communication and escalation of risks and dependencies while ensuring timely decisions are being made.
  • Communicate to and regularly interact with senior management, highlighting risks across functional teams and providing recommendations to support product level decisions.
  • Operate effectively in ambiguity. Apply process where it creates value, and design processes where needed.
  • Personally navigate and skillfully lead others through complex, interrelated technical challenges and business issues to deliver impactful results.  This includes timely reporting of meaningful status and supporting detail to senior leadership and other internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure cross functional alignment: generating clarity, tracking towards development milestones and overall readiness for all new Data Center infrastructure development, launch, and deployments.
