Job Description

As a Senior Project Manager at Thales, you will be responsible for managing capital projects, contributing to engineering solutions, and enhancing production capacity. This 2-year fixed-term role involves leading projects from initiation to completion, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance with standards, overseeing design and implementation, and managing project schedules, budgets, and resources. You will also conduct risk assessments and troubleshoot challenges to mitigate potential issues. This role requires a strong understanding of engineering principles and project management methodologies to ensure successful project delivery in a dynamic industrial environment.
Must have:
  • Manage capital projects from start to finish, within scope and budget.
  • Coordinate with teams, contractors, and stakeholders effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering plans, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Oversee design, development, and implementation of systems.
  • Develop and manage project schedules and budgets effectively.
  • Conduct risk assessments and address project challenges proactively.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably chemical or mechanical.
  • Eligibility to obtain Australian Defence Clearances.
Good to have:
  • Experience in a chemical, manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Certification in Project Management (e.g., PMP).

Our Australian Munitions (AM) teams in Benalla and Mulwala produce propellants, explosives and munitions for defence and commercial uses. In this 2-year fixed term and working from our Melbourne Office in the World Trade Centre on Wurundjeri land, your role purpose will be to manage capital projects and contribute to finding technical engineering solutions that enhance AM’s production capacity, ensuring their successful delivery in a dynamic and growing industrial environment.

Your responsibilities

  • Lead and manage capital projects from initiation through to completion, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget

  • Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with project objectives, timelines, and quality standards

  • Ensure compliance with engineering plans, regulatory requirements, safety protocols, and environmental standards

  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of systems, equipment, and processes, driving continuous improvement

  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and resources to effectively meet project goals

  • Conduct risk assessments, troubleshooting, and problem-solving to address project challenges and mitigate potential issues

  • Ensure adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards throughout project execution

Your Experience

On day one in this role, we'll expect you to bring the following skills, experience and behaviours: 

  • Proven experience in managing complex capital projects, ideally in a chemical, manufacturing or industrial setting

  • Expertise in manufacturing facility upgrades, process optimization, and enhancing operational efficiency in industrial settings

  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, technical problem-solving, and project management methodologies

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail with the ability to identify and address project risks and challenges

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities, with a focus on safety and compliance

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is essential, preferably chemical or mechanical

  • Project Management, or a related field and certification in Project Management (e.g., PMP or similar) is desirable

  • Must be eligible to obtain Australian Defence Clearances

  • Flexibility to travel to Mulwala and Benalla frequently or as required by the project
