The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
The New York Times is looking for a graphics journalist based in London who can help expand our visual coverage of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This person will report and help execute news graphics and multimedia features using data, imagery, mapping and other forms of visual storytelling.
You will join a group of graphics reporters and editors on the International desk, including an expanding team of visual journalists in London.
We have investigated how Russia silenced wartime dissent and blew up a Ukrainian dam, and documented the toll of Hamas’ attack in Israel and Israel’s deadly response in Gaza. We have explained how a man escaped seven months in a Myanmar scam operation, how the unstoppable force of aging will reshape the world, and whether South Africa has truly defeated apartheid. And we have visualized the unequal health effects of extreme heat in Singapore and Iraq, the flawed decisions that led to deaths in an earthquake in Turkey and the path of asylum seekers who were ditched at sea by Greek authorities.
We want to do more of these kinds of stories.
Your work will include a mix of news coverage and longer-term enterprise. You will report and visualize your own stories in addition to working to shape our most critical international storylines as a critical part of multidisciplinary teams of reporters, designers, photo editors and video journalists. And you will work with on-the-ground correspondents to hold governments accountable and help readers better understand the world.
This is a hybrid position based in London and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.
