As a Principal Software Engineer focused on Kubernetes within Microsoft's Azure Edge + Platform (Sky team), you'll design and implement solutions ensuring reliability, security, and compliance for internal cloud-native services. This involves collaborating with stakeholders to define product strategy and working with Program Management and Engineering teams. You'll leverage your Kubernetes expertise to lead implementation, fostering a culture of standardized solutions. Responsibilities span all areas of Azure's business and cloud technology layers, requiring quick adaptation to new areas. You will be a key component in establishing standardized solutions with a quality focus.
Must have:
  • 4+ years Kubernetes experience
  • 4+ years in software development (C#, C++, Go)
  • Cloud-native technologies expertise (containers, Go)
  • Ability to participate in 24x7 on-call rotation
  • Lead design and implementation of solutions
Good to have:
  • Large-scale Kubernetes environment experience (10s of clusters)
  • Kubernetes networking & security best practices knowledge
  • Understanding of modern software & systems architectures

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:   

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 4+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, or systems engineering
    • OR equivalent experience. 
  • 4+ years of experience in software development coding an object-oriented, strongly typed programming language such as C#, C++, or Go. 
  • 4+ years of experience with Cloud Native technologies including containers, Go, and Kubernetes 
  • Ability to participate in a period, global 24x7 on-call rotation.  

 

Other Requirements

  • Background Check: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience operating a large-scale Kubernetes environment (10’s of clusters) which hosts multiple applications.  
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes networking configurations and security best practices. 
  • Awareness of, and ability to reason about, modern software & systems architectures, including load-balancing, queueing, caching, distributed systems failure modes, and microservices. 
  • Strong understanding of computer science, including data structures and algorithms 
  • Experience designing, building, and troubleshooting complex software systems. 
    • Demonstrable ability to own and deliver software projects, particularly through technical leadership of other engineers. 
  • Willingness and ability to respectfully challenge the status quo, using negotiation and collaboration to influence others across organizational silos.

 

Service Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

As a Kubernetes focused Principal Software Engineer on the Sky team, you will have the incredible opportunity to work on business-critical initiatives that directly contribute to the future of Microsoft’s   business. You must be deeply technical, collaborative, and experienced with Kubernetes, and able to ramp up in new areas quickly since your responsibilities will span all areas of Azure’s business as well as all layers of the cloud technology stack.  

In this role you will leverage your Kubernetes expertise to lead the design and implementation of solutions that deliver reliability, security and compliance fundamentals to Microsoft’s internal cloud native services. This will require working with stakeholders across the company to define the long and short-term product strategy in collaboration with upstream and downstream dependent Program Management and Engineering teams. You will also be a key component of fostering our engineering culture for standardized solutions with a quality focus.
