Job Description

The Senior Design Engineer, Systems role involves technical leadership in delivering critical products, specifically designing and qualifying hardware appliances for security solutions. Responsibilities include collaborating with internal and external teams, analyzing product requirements, and ensuring smooth transition from development to launch. This role requires analyzing products at a system level to optimize costs, quality, features, and performance. The engineer will also work closely with product, project and development teams to implement successful product launches and will be an end-user advocate.

  • 5+ years of hardware technology experience
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to automate in Python, Powershell, and Bash
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Understanding of enterprise and datacenter technologies
  • Experience with Atlassian tools like Jira
Good to have:
  • Experience with AI/machine learning technologies

Job Description

The Systems Engineering team at Motorola is spearheading the development of our secure, reliable and scalable security solutions. From working with potential vendors/suppliers to the technical design of our appliance products, the System Engineer serves as the core technical leader in driving our new product launches from concept to production. You will be counted upon to work very closely with our product, project and development teams to implement successful launch of our product.  

This Senior Design Engineer, Systems role is multidisciplinary and a pivotal role in the organization.  You’re expected to meet the challenges of coordinating with multiple internal and external teams, gaining insight into our software application layer, characterizing our systems and working with team members to better automate our release and tooling development. You will be responsible for analyzing our products at a system level, looking for optimizations in cost, quality, features, and performance.  The data is then reviewed with organizational stakeholders to inform decisions at early design stages that ultimately feed into the products being launched in the market.   You will be the end-user advocate first and foremost which will help inform these team decisions and drive test planning.

This position is based in Vancouver, BC and the candidate must reside in the Greater Vancouver Area as you will be required to go into the office on a hybrid work schedule.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Take technical leadership in delivering mission critical products with the utmost care in quality
  • Designing and qualifying hardware appliances for our industry leading, end-to-end security monitoring solutions including rackmount NVR and AI servers and workstations.
  • Working with ODM/OEM partners to design, validate, and deliver top quality/performance appliances and solutions.
  • Working closely with the product management team to analyze product requirements.
  • Working closely with the project management team define timelines for product delivery.
  • Responsible for the performance measurement, analysis, qualification, and productization of platforms that host our storage server and clients 
  • Measure and report on the performance of various components of our system. Including components such as graphics, network, memory, storage, etc.
  • Identify and make recommendations to remove or reduce performance bottlenecks
  • Collaborating with manufacturing engineering team to ensure a smooth transition from product development to product launch
  • Build relationships with internal software teams, technical support, product management, sourcing, manufacturing, and others including third party vendors.
  • Participate and lead  in the RFP process for OEM vendor and solution selection.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in related hardware technologies
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, effective communicator at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to automate in python, Powershell, and Bash or similar 
  • Highly organized, good attention to detail, capable of multi-tasking and following through on tasks to completion.
  • Self-motivated and proactive with a desire to innovate
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise documentation for a variety of audiences
  • Software development methodologies and OOB patterns
  • Self-motivated, with the ability to learn quickly and independently
  • An understanding of enterprise and datacenter technologies, including SATA, SAS, PCIe, DP, HDMI, RAID, SAN/NAS, etc.
  • Experience with Atlassian tools: Jira, bitbucket, confluence
  • Experience with AI/machine learning technologies is strongly preferred

Target Base Salary Range: $62,600 - $128,300 CAD

Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.
