About the job

Job Description

Tesla's drive unit development team seeks skilled mechanical engineers to advance power electronics, motors, and geartrains. Responsibilities include designing and 3D modeling mechanical components (plastics, sheet metal, heat sinks, etc.), solving electronics packaging issues (thermal management, EMI), creating drawing packages and manufacturing instructions, assisting in prototype builds, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The role involves taking designs from concept to mass production. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, significant experience in mechanical assembly design, and proficiency in 3D modeling and analysis tools like CATIA and ANSYS.
Must have:
  • BSc/MSc/PhD in Mechanical Engineering
  • Deep understanding of ME fundamentals
  • Experience designing & building assemblies
  • Proficiency in CATIA & ANSYS
  • Experience with GD&T
  • Hands-on prototype building & testing
Good to have:
  • Awareness of EMI requirements
  • High-voltage product design experience
  • High-volume manufacturing process experience
  • PLM system experience
  • Knowledge of Matlab/Python
What to Expect
Tesla’s drive unit development team is looking for skilled and motivated mechanical engineers to push the power electronics, motors and geartrains propelling our vehicles to the next level. The team is presently working to improve the current - and design the next - generation of drive units and is looking for engineers (any level) to help drive our designs to the physical limits. It's an exciting work environment with plenty of engineering resources and bright colleagues to collaborate with. As an industry leading company, Tesla offers the opportunity to work on bleeding edge technology in a fast paced, dynamic, and high visibility role.
What You’ll Do
  • Design and 3D modeling of mechanical components and assemblies including plastics, sheet metal, heat sinks, insulation systems, high voltage connectors, fasteners, and other components.

  • Solve electronics packaging issues including electrical isolation, sealing, thermal management, interconnections, shock and vibration management, electromagnetic interference, etc.

  • Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies.

  • Assist hands-on in engineering prototype builds and component fabrication.

  • Collaborate with other mechanical, systems, electrical, digital control, manufacturing, and test engineers to take designs from a clean sheet through prototypes and into mass production.

What You’ll Bring
  • B.Sc./M.Sc./Ph.D. (w/ relevant internship/working experience) in Mechanical Engineering and evidence of exceptional ability.

  • Deep understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals (heat transfer, fluids, statics, dynamics, structural design).

  • Significant experience designing and building mechanical assemblies.

  • Material science knowledge of materials used in electronics packaging (metals, insulators, plastics, connectors, gaskets, thermal interface materials, potting, etc.).

  • Proficiency using 3D mechanical design and analysis tools (CATIA V5 and/or V6, ANSYS).

  • Experience using GD&T to control part features.

  • Hands-on experience to build and test prototypes.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Awareness of EMI requirements relevant to the design of power converters.

  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals, preferably designing mechanical components for high voltage products.

  • Experience with high volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, stamping, etc.

  • Experience with PLM systems, engineering changes, deviations, BOM structuring, etc.

  • Experience with environmental, reliability, safety, and industry standard requirements for automotive, industrial & residential products.

  • Knowledge of Matlab and/or Python.
