The Senior Power Hardware Engineer at Microsoft's Azure Hardware Systems & Infrastructure (AHSI) will contribute to the strategic planning and architecture (SPARC) team. Responsibilities include building internal and external power infrastructure roadmaps, influencing power-efficient energy strategies for data centers, collaborating with OEMs and vendors, analyzing total data center power efficiency, and evaluating new technologies to improve Azure hardware and reduce TCO. The role involves analyzing system concepts from a total cost of ownership perspective and creating design concepts for new power delivery solutions. Collaboration with various teams, specification of high-performance hyperscale system requirements, and relationship building with stakeholders are key aspects of this position.

Join our Strategic Planning and Architecture (SPARC) team within Microsoft’s Azure Hardware Systems & Infrastructure (AHSI) organization and be a part of the organization behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission.   

 Microsoft delivers more than 200 online services to more than one billion individuals worldwide and AHSI is the team behind our expanding cloud infrastructure. We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's cloud businesses including Microsoft Azure, Bing, MSN, Office 365, OneDrive, Skype, Teams and Xbox Live.  

 The SPARC organization manages Azure’s hardware roadmap from architecture concept through production for all of Microsoft’s current and future on-line services. Well-defined and executed strategic planning ensures products meet the requirements for performance, features, and time-to-market. The ability to draw insights from a deep understanding of the cloud HW Infrastructure landscape and industry trends is critical in informing the roadmap and planning decisions. Deep technical understanding of our hardware architecture, workload modeling and analysis are necessary to making informed, data-driven decisions. Our hardware technology pathfinding work helps keep our product portfolio competitive by maturing new concepts for productization. Together, these functions create a strategic hardware and technology roadmap.  

 To fulfill our mission, SPARC technology planning and pathfinding team is seeking a highly motivated Senior Power Hardware Engineer for the development of complex servers and infrastructure with a concentration on advanced high-performance systems utilizing advanced power delivery solution technologies.  The candidate will collaborate closely with Microsoft product groups, industry partners and researchers to develop systems concepts that will meet the requirements for Microsoft cloud services platforms at the lowest possible Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).  The candidate will be responsible for evaluating technology and conceptualizing potential prototypes. 

The Senior Power Hardware Engineer will collaborate internally and externally to supply on-paper analysis and prototyping of the most promising concepts to be matured into production.  

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in designing and deploying power electronics, designing, testing, and debugging power electronics such as AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC power conversion, switching power supplies, driver circuits, and battery systems. 
  • Experience with data center power distribution to server racks and within server racks as well as gathering requirements and developing server specifications and a demonstrated ability to engage technology developers in the industry to track and apply emerging technologies to innovative server designs. 
  • Solid understanding of cloud hardware components, architectures, and power technologies.   
  • Experience working with overseas CM/OEM/ODM vendors in product development 

 

PERFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.  
  • Experience with platforms deployed in hyperscale or cloud datacenters.  
  • Experience in conducting Total Cost of Ownership analysis of cloud infrastructure solutions.  
  • Deep understanding of different power electronics circuit topologies as well as experience designing or testing products for safety, compliance, and regulatory standards. 
  • Continually abreast of the latest innovations in the power and computer hardware industry.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Build internal and external power infrastructure strategy roadmaps, influencing power efficient energy strategy for Microsoft data centers. 
  • Influence key external partners such as OEMs and vendors to evaluate power technologies and topologies for datacenter rack deployments. 
  • Analyze total datacenter power efficiency from input power into the datacenter to the point of load.  
  • Collaborate across Microsoft organizations to understand business needs and evaluate how new technologies may be utilized to improve Azure hardware, solve problems, and reduce TCO.  Analyze system concepts from a total cost of ownership (TCO), performance per TCO, and performance per watt perspective. 
  • Create design concepts and perform in-depth analysis of possible implementations of new technologies, focusing on furthering technological & manufacturing readiness levels and examining business impacts of different power delivery solutions. 
  • Partner with peer organizations to define and specify high-performance hyperscale systems requirements.  Build relationships with stakeholders in system architecture, power and infrastructure teams.
