Job Description

This Software Engineer II role focuses on building scalable, maintainable, and well-tested software solutions for Disney's content delivery platform. Responsibilities include designing, writing, testing, and deploying high-quality code; collaborating with data engineering and science teams on machine learning integrations; troubleshooting and resolving issues in existing code; and continuous learning in software development, cloud computing, and machine learning. The role supports content delivery for brands such as Disney+, ESPN+, Hulu, ABC, Marvel, and Star Wars, contributing to a world-class content platform that reaches millions of viewers daily. The engineer will work within Content Platform Engineering, a team responsible for building and innovating a global content supply chain for Disney's diverse media offerings.
Must have:
  • 3+ years experience
  • Proficiency in Java, Python, or JavaScript
  • REST APIs or GraphQL experience
  • AWS cloud platform knowledge
  • Database knowledge (MongoDB, SQL)
  • Software development fundamentals
  • Problem-solving and teamwork
Good to have:
  • Docker and Kubernetes
  • ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • Databricks or similar platforms
  • Cloud security best practices
  • Distributed systems or microservices

Content Operations is ultimately responsible for successfully delivering entertainment and sports content to millions of people every day. This involves developing, operating, and leading a global content supply chain – the myriad of steps involved from taking a finalized TV show/movie, or live piece of content, from inside Disney to audiences around the globe, in their preferred language and format. This team also leads technology operations in Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Content Platform Engineering is hiring someone to help build and innovate a world class content platform to support content delivery for brands such as Disney plus, ESPN+, Hulu, ABC, Marvel and Star Wars. Our team of talented software engineers builds and manages a diverse suite of products and services that advance Disney’s media supply chain powering some of the most watched entertainment content. You will help to define platform capabilities, designing and implementing product solutions using solid design principles, while balancing complexity, speed of implementation, and expandability.

Responsibilities:

This role will be responsible for building scalable, maintainable, and well-tested software solutions that are adaptable to meet the needs of various customers and stakeholders. This role will:

  • Write and Maintain Software Solutions: Design, write, test, and deploy high-quality code to develop reliable, maintainable software solutions under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work with data engineering and data science teams to support the creation and integration of machine learning models and data pipelines.
  • Troubleshoot and Resolve Issues: Debug and fix issues in existing code, working with senior engineers to improve application functionality.
  • Continuous Learning: Take initiative in learning new programming languages, tools, and techniques related to software development, cloud computing, and machine learning.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years related work experience.
  • Proficiency in at least one core programming language (e.g., Java, Python, or JavaScript) for building reliable and maintainable software solutions.
  • Experience working with REST APIs or GraphQL for building and consuming web services.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS and their core services (e.g., S3, Lambda, EC2).
  • Knowledge of database systems, including MongoDB (NoSQL) and SQL-based databases.
  • Exposure to event streaming platforms like Apache Kafka for data integration and messaging.
  • Understanding of software development fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Exposure to machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn) or building AI/ML solutions.
  • Familiarity with Databricks or other data engineering platforms for managing large-scale data workflows.
  • Understanding of security best practices in cloud-based environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical solutions and processes clearly.
  • Experience working with distributed systems or microservices architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools like GitlabCI, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins.

The hiring range for this position in California and Connecticut is $114,900 to $154.100 per year based on a 40 hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
