The WRI Brazil is looking for a professional to act as Vice Directorate of Restoration to support the Restaura Biomas Program, a project developed in partnership with Conservation International as a partner agency of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). WRI Brazil acts as an executing agency, while the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) is the governmental partner, contributing to the implementation of the National Policy for the Recovery of Native Vegetation (PROVEG). The program aims to meet the requirements and objectives aligned with WRI Brazil's strategy and the Union for Restoration.
Restaura Biomas is part of the Integrated Ecosystem Restoration Program, a global GEF initiative that covers 20 countries and has more than 200 million dollars allocated to ecological restoration.
Main activities and/or responsibilities
Strategy and impact (30%)
- Analyze current initiatives, develop and implement strategies that drive the national, subnational, and international agenda, working closely with WRI's global and Latin American offices, allowing WRI Brazil to be a reference in the restoration agenda.
- Support the Directorate of Forests and Restoration and its initiatives focused on critical issues and high-impact opportunities, where WRI's tools, analyses, and partnerships are of added value and can lead to real results.
- Ensure that the Directorate of Forests and Restoration has a compelling vision, a solid research base, and a coherent engagement strategy that provides social and environmental benefits.
- Ensure that programmatic initiatives lead to transformative changes in the sustainability of forest ecosystems and the increasing role of forests in development, with a special focus on reducing inequality, climate change, and sustainable land use.
- Promote a culture of excellence and diversity in all aspects of the Program.
- Inspire and engage the team of professionals to implement WRI Brazil's strategy.
- Support the Directorate of Forests and Restoration.
Management (30%)
- Develop and manage the team, delegating authority, ensuring its effectiveness and support, and ensuring that the expected results and deliveries are achieved.
- Oversee the budgetary performance of the Directorate of Forests and Restoration.
- Engage other senior WRI managers on strategic and operational institutional issues to promote the interests of the Program and WRI as a whole, both nationally and internationally.
- Monitor high-level communications being developed by team staff to ensure they meet WRI's high quality standards.
- Participate in the management team of the Forests and Land Use Program.
Fundraising (20%)
- In partnership with the Directorates, develop the fundraising strategy for WRI Brazil.
- Oversee investments and fundraising efforts.
- Actively cultivate and manage relationships with existing donors, nationally and internationally, ensuring renewals.
- Guide employees to expand their fundraising skills, help them manage existing fundraising relationships, and cultivate new funding prospects.
Institutional representation (20%)
- Support and make presentations at public events, national and international forums, individual meetings, and within WRI.
- Support the preparation and conduct of research, summaries, blogs, and Op-eds, media interviews, and collaborate with communication and engagement strategies to define public and private sector agendas, and communicate program results and recommendations.
- Contribute ideas, knowledge, and experience to shape the Conservation and Restoration agenda.
- Support the development and communication of compelling external narratives to describe the Program's strategies, initiatives, results, policy positions, etc.
Required qualifications
- A master's or doctorate degree in natural or social sciences relevant to forests and agriculture is desirable.
- Minimum experience of more than 15 years in leadership positions and working in areas relevant to forest conservation, sustainable agriculture/land use management, and restoration is desirable.
- Minimum experience of 15 years in program management and/or project implementation is desirable.
- Proven ability to successfully motivate and manage large teams to reach their full potential and achieve results.
- Strong team spirit, with the ability to work across institutional departments/programs.
- Ability to manage effective partnerships with various stakeholders (especially the private sector).
- Proven ability to provide vision and excellent strategic thinking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to secure large-scale donor funding.
- Excellent ability to communicate clearly, passionately, and convincingly with a wide range of audiences, especially high-level decision-makers from government, the private sector, the media, and civil society.
- Proficiency in oral and written communication in English and Portuguese. (e.g., research summaries, blogs, proposals)
- Strong network of relationships and partners at national and international levels.
- Experience in supervising and managing budgets.
- Availability to travel, nationally and internationally.
- Ability to work independently, under minimal direction and supervision.
- Resourceful, with the ability to think innovatively, deal with ambiguous situations, and find solutions when no seemingly visible solutions exist.
- Ability to make sound decisions based on available information.
- Adaptability, flexibility, and leadership skills in an environment of transitions and changes.
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
