The Commissioning Lead at Microsoft's Zaragoza campus is responsible for managing the end-to-end commissioning of new data center capacity. This involves working with various teams (architects, engineers, construction managers, etc.) to streamline delivery, ensuring projects align with Microsoft standards and budgets. Responsibilities include developing commissioning procedures, conducting site inspections, managing vendors, reporting progress, and contributing to long-term delivery strategy within the EMEA region. The role requires extensive experience in data center commissioning, construction, and operation, and proficiency in technical documentation and project management.

Overview

The CO+I Commissioning team is responsible for managing the end-to-end delivery of new data center capacity for CO+I. Through development of leading program management and construction processes, this team is chartered with managing workflow across vertically and horizontally aligned project managers and virtual teams to successfully deliver multi-million dollar, multi-year data center construction programs.

 

As a Commissioning Lead for our Zaragoza Campus, you will work with data center architects, engineers, construction managers, network engineers, data center operations teams and finance teams in order to streamline and improve delivery of data center capacity. You will execute against scope, schedule and budget to deliver the latest generation of datacenter technology to Microsoft’s Online Services.

 

You shall be responsible for ensuring the project is commissioned in accordance with Microsoft's standards and directly manage the process for projects with in EMEA region.

 

Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates must ​relocate or reside within 50 miles of the field location in Zaragoza. This role is not eligible for hybrid or remote work.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND relevant technical engineering experience
  • OR extensive relevant technical engineering experience.
  • Commissioning Certification
  • OSHA 10 or higher qualification
  • NFPA-70E
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • HV-AP Authorized

Required Skills and experience:

  • Data Center Commissioning
  • Data Center Operation and Maintenance
  • Understanding of UPS systems, switchgear, generators and critical mechanical cooling systems
  • Construction QA/QC
  • Electrical HV, MV and LV distribution and substation experience
  • At least 3 years’ experience in Data Center facility maintenance, operation, construction and/or commissioning
  • Construction experience with new build projects
  • Experience with electrical Test Equipment
  • Able to develop and write detailed Commissioning Scripts and Switching Schedules
  • Issue identification and resolution management
  • Project Management
  • Proficient in spoken and written English including technical
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Visio, MS Project , MS Teams

Responsibilities

  • Business Processes
    • Reports to the CO+I Regional Commissioning Lead
    • Primary responsibility for Commissioning projects in South & South East Europe.  
    • Secondary responsibility for supporting Cx team on other CO+I commission Build and Lease program for EMEA
    • Create and/or maintain best practices to identify and incorporate quality and cost-effective solutions.
    • Manage the contracted Commissioning Agent assigned to Data Center construction projects in region.
    • Development of Commissioning Procedures and Standards.
    • Construction site inspections to review QA/QC and commissioning process.
    • Drive the project Commissioning process including scope and schedule.
    • This role requires regular on-site presence with travel locally within the regions.
    • International travel will form an important part of the role.
  • Communications
    • Regularly reviews Construction Progress, QA/QC, Commissioning progress, issues, and KPI metrics to report to management.
    • Coordinate meetings and activities of vendor project managers including integration of lessons-learned.
    • Manage client representatives and partners to define and align on scope, schedule, and budget.
    • Attend scheduled owner/architect/contractor (OAC) and other project meetings, and report as necessary.
    • Report Project Progress on scope, schedule, and budget weekly or as required.
  • Accountability
    • Responsible for developing, managing, and reporting on scope, schedule of the Commissioning Process for CO+I Projects.
    • Manage the Commissioning process for EMEA region projects.
    • Reporting of the Commissioning process to management on a regular basis.
    • Work independently in support of the CO+I Program.
  • Strategy and Development
    • Manage data center commissioning project delivery strategy in alignment with the CO+I road map strategy.
    • Refines practices/policies and develops methods/techniques for driving solutions including development of commissioning procedures.
    • Provides input to long-term delivery strategy and incorporates requirements into the project execution plans.
  • Vendor Management and contract compliance
    • Drive Lease provides to maintain Commissioning compliance to Microsoft standards
    • Provide Vendor oversight and performance management (Scorecard driven).
    • Preparation of RFP's, PER's, and other project approval tools & templates.
