This Database Engineer II role at a Video Game Studio in Los Angeles involves managing and optimizing the database infrastructure supporting games and services. As a Database Engineer II, you will play a critical role in managing and optimizing the database infrastructure that supports the studio’s games and services. You’ll be responsible for designing and implementing solutions that help teams adhere to established database standards, making their service databases easier to operate and maintain. Key Responsibilities:

  • Database Management: Respond to on-call, customer, or emergent issues related to database deployments, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Infrastructure Optimization: Configure, deploy, maintain, and optimize new and existing database infrastructure to support games and services at scale.
  • Data Migration & Upgrades: Design and implement data migrations between MySQL sources as part of routine database consolidation, upgrades, and host changes.
  • Replication & Backup: Design and implement replication and backup strategies for critical MySQL databases, ensuring high availability and reliability.
  • Database Monitoring: Implement database-level monitoring and alerting systems for Riot’s MySQL stack to ensure performance and uptime.
  • Performance Optimization: Design and implement relational database schema and query changes, working closely with service and game development teams to enhance database performance.
  • Automation: Design and implement automation strategies to streamline database management and improve scalability.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience: 3+ years of database administration experience with both cloud-based and locally deployed MySQL technologies.
  • Database Expertise: 4+ years of experience managing large-scale relational MySQL databases.
  • Lifecycle Knowledge: Experience with the full database development lifecycle, including design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Technical Skills: Strong ability to administrate, maintain, and recover MySQL databases and optimize SQL query performance.
  • Problem Solving: Experience solving complex database issues using programming scripts (e.g., Python, Bash).
  • Automation & Migration: Proven ability to design and implement automated data migrations using replication, code, and business logic between systems.
  • Monitoring & Alerting: Experience using monitoring and alerting tools to ensure the health of your database ecosystem.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Cloud & Containerization: Hands-on experience with AWS RDS or Aurora, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Programming: Experience with programming languages such as GoLang, Python, and/or Java.
  • Linux Administration: Strong Linux systems administration skills for operating databases and infrastructure.
  • Language Skills: Conversational proficiency in Korean is a plus.
