Job Description

SkyBox Labs seeks an Environment Artist to contribute to Destiny 2's immersive worlds. Responsibilities include collaborating with designers and artists to create engaging game spaces using organic and hard-surface elements. This role encompasses the entire process, from initial ideation to final in-engine refinement, including asset placement and optimization. The artist will work directly within the game engine, focusing on level layouts, composition, environmental storytelling, and performance optimization while adhering to established pipelines. Close collaboration with level designers to ensure world layouts enhance player experience is crucial.
Must have:
  • World-building experience in a game engine
  • Strong level art & design sensibilities
  • Proficiency in 3ds Max or Maya
  • Excellent communication & collaboration skills
  • Organized & adaptable, strong time management
  • Problem-solving skills, ability to learn new tools
Good to have:
  • Understanding of lighting, FX, or other disciplines
  • Asset modeling experience
  • Familiarity with Perforce, Jira, and Shotgrid

The studio is currently co-developing Halo Infinite, working on projects in the Minecraft universe, supporting the dev team at Bungie on Destiny, supporting development of Fallout 76, and working on original IP. SkyBox Labs is looking for an Environment Artist to join our team and contribute to the immersive worlds of Destiny 2. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with multiple teams of skilled and talented individuals to shape compelling game spaces. Your focus will be on engine-driven world-building, owning your space from ideation to the finished level, placing pre-made assets, and utilizing your creative power to bring vibrant environments to life.

A snapshot of your role:

    • Work closely with designers, artists, and other disciplines to craft immersive spaces that align with gameplay and narrative needs
    • Build world layouts using a mix of organic and hard surface elements 
    • Own your space from ideation all the way to fully realized, living environment
    • Work directly in-engine to refine level layouts, composition, and environmental storytelling
    • Optimize and problem-solve within a proprietary pipeline, ensuring performance goals are met without sacrificing quality
    • Collaborate with level designers to ensure world layouts enhance the player experience

Sound Like You? Here’s What We’re Looking For:

    • World-building experience in a game engine
    • Strong level art and design sensibilities, with a track record of working alongside designers to build gameplay-ready spaces
    • Strong proficiency in 3ds Max or Maya
    • Great communication and collaboration skills to work effectively across teams
    • Organized and adaptable, with strong time management skills
    • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to learn new tools and workflows
    • A portfolio showcasing environmental storytelling, creativity, and technical skill
