Job Details

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Join the 2025 New York Times Fellowship class as an A.I. Initiatives fellow in New York.

We are looking for a fellow who will bring a mix of machine-learning and journalism experience to newsroom reporting projects. You will work with journalists across departments to identify, develop and execute projects that use the power of artificial intelligence, applying machine learning and data science techniques to address investigative challenges. You will be part of the A.I. Initiatives team, which includes editors, engineers and a product designer.

This is a hybrid position that requires regular attendance in the New York office each week, per departmental guidance. You may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with investigative reporters to support projects that benefit from A.I., including large-scale research, transcription, translation, document search, language analysis and computer vision tasks
  • Identify opportunities and experiment with responsible A.I. tools to empower the newsroom
  • Participate in training and social programs designed for the fellowship
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

  • No more than five years of full-time, professional experience in journalism and/or machine learning
  • Technical proficiency and experience analyzing data, developing applications and conducting research with machine-learning models
  • Engineering skills and experience with APIs, front-end web applications and databases
  • Recent experience working with LLMs and other machine-learning models
  • Interest in the intersection of journalism and artificial intelligence
  • Understanding of ethical considerations surrounding the use of A.I. in journalism

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of multiple news or opinion journalism internships, or equivalent experience
  • Work demonstrating experience applying A.I. to real-world problems
  • Experience working with large datasets and cloud computing platforms
  • Experience working with Svelte or similar front-end frameworks

To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter. The application will prompt you when to upload materials. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

You must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended with Optional Practical Training.

You may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as an A.I. Initiatives fellow, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 2.

The Times Fellowship generates a high level of interest, so we cannot acknowledge the status of every application upon receipt or during the vetting process, which can take eight weeks or more. We cannot accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. We will contact you for interviews as needed.

The fellowship program will begin on or about June 2, 2025, and end on May 22, 2026, subject to satisfactory performance. There is no guarantee of a full-time position upon completion of the program.
