The FEOL R&D Process Manager leads a team (8-15) focused on front-end-of-line (FEOL) process R&D for eyepiece technology in Austin, TX. Responsibilities include setting team goals, managing resources across photolithography, plasma etch, and thin film deposition, applying expertise in nanofabrication processes, coordinating with process integration and other teams (materials R&D, optical design, factory engineering) to transition R&D to production, guiding equipment selection and budgeting, leading material qualification, and ensuring timely project completion. The role requires strong technical expertise in nanofabrication, including imprint and lithographic processes, plasma etching, wafer cleaning, CVD, metals deposition, and thin film metrology. Experience in semiconductor or AR hardware development is essential.

The opportunity 

The FEOL R&D Process Manager will lead a team focused on front-end-of-line (FEOL) process R&D for groundbreaking eyepiece technology at Magic Leap’s Austin facility. This role is integral to advancing our nanofabrication processes and working closely with cross-functional teams to transition innovative designs from research to production. You'll be at the forefront of AR hardware development, tackling complex fabrication challenges and driving high-impact projects that bring new technology to life.

This role requires someone to be onsite in Austin, TX. Relocation assistance may be available

What you’ll do 

  • Lead a team of 8–15 R&D professionals, setting clear goals and providing feedback to support their professional growth.
  • Establish project priorities and manage resources, ensuring efficient workflow across photolithography, plasma etch, and thin film deposition units.
  • Apply expertise in nanofabrication, including imprint and lithographic processes, wafer cleaning, plasma etch, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and metals deposition.
  • Coordinate with the process integration team and use sound judgment to manage competing priorities around project schedules and tool health.
  • Collaborate with teams across nanofabrication, materials R&D, optical design, and factory engineering to transition R&D processes into a scalable production environment.
  • Provide guidance on equipment selection, budgeting, and qualification to ensure process compatibility with factory requirements.
  • Lead qualification of new materials, substrates, and films in a pilot production setting.
  • Ensure timely project completion by coordinating with facilities, logistics, and supply chain support teams.

The experience you bring

  • Proven experience in nanofabrication, ideally within semiconductor or AR hardware development.
  • Strong technical expertise in imprint and conventional lithographic processes, plasma etching, wafer cleaning, CVD, metals deposition, and thin film metrology.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods (MSA/GRR) and process improvement techniques.
  • Familiarity with JMP or similar data visualization tools for organizing and analyzing complex data sets.
  • Ability to build and sustain effective working relationships across multiple engineering disciplines.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience in characterizing materials and developing test protocols for sub-assembly components.
  • A strong statistical background and experience in custom scripting for data post-processing (e.g., Python, Matlab)
