Netflix seeks an experienced lawyer to support creative, business, and legal teams in managing IP issues and negotiating and drafting content acquisition and distribution agreements across the SONOLA region (North and South of Latin America), including mainly Colombia, Argentina, and Chile. This role will be based in Bogotá, Colombia, and report directly to our head of Business and Legal Affairs for NOLA in Mexico City.

The opportunity

In this role, you will collaborate closely with the creative, business, and legal teams responsible for producing Netflix's exceptional content. Your primary responsibilities will focus on two key areas: managing intellectual property (IP) matters as they arise, and drafting and negotiating content acquisition and distribution license agreements. 

As part of your IP responsibilities, you will advise film and television productions, as well as Netflix’s creative and Business and Legal Affairs executives, on all IP-related matters across the SONOLA region. This includes identifying and managing risks associated with trademarks, copyrights, and defamation, effectively communicating with relevant stakeholders, and making decisions regarding them. You will collaborate with the Business and Legal Affairs team to acquire and develop IP, ensuring it is shepherded through production and distribution with a focus on understanding IP risks. Additionally, you will provide guidance on the chain of title, production clearance, IP enforcement, and pre-litigation defense, and work with our LATAM  litigation team on IP litigation matters in SONOLA.

In your role within Business and Legal Affairs for content licensing, you will be responsible for a wide array of content acquisition and distribution deals with international studios, networks and local distributors for exhibition on the Netflix service. The successful candidate will work with the company’s regional license content acquisition team to structure, negotiate, and draft agreements to stream television series and films to Netflix members.

You are eager to continue learning, and you should be extremely comfortable counseling business partners and making decisions that have both legal and business impacts. 

 Responsibilities

• Responsible for overseeing IP matters that arise throughout the pre-production, production, and post-production process, such as identifying and managing risks associated with trademarks, copyrights, and defamation

• Supporting the Business and Legal Affairs team to acquire and develop IP. 

• Providing guidance on the chain of title, production clearance, IP enforcement, pre-litigation defense

• Working with our LATAM  litigation team on IP litigation matters in SONOLA.

• Communicating with external partners and external counsel

• Maintaining close alignment with multiple internal cross-functional partners, guiding them on IP legal matters and best practices.

• Negotiate and draft content acquisition and distribution agreements in national and/or international markets. 

The ideal candidate will have:

• 7+ years experience as an IP lawyer in content or entertainment-related fields (e.g., production, gaming, music, theatre, broadcasting, or law firms specializing in these industries). 

• Production clearance experience in film and/or television. 

• Practical knowledge of the industry (including content windowing strategies, and the evolving theatrical, SVOD, pay TV, and home video landscapes) and local players. Experience providing in-house support in an Internet and/or entertainment company is a plus. 

• In-depth knowledge of IP law, media, and personality rights in Colombia, covering copyright, moral rights, trademarks, fair dealing, rights of publicity/privacy, defamation, and freedom of speech. Knowledge or experience in other countries of the SONOLA region is a plus. 

• Strong relationships with top external counsel and vendors in IP legal space. 

• Proven ability to manage and resolve IP disputes, handle complex copyright transactions, and chain of title review, providing concise and pragmatic analysis. 

• Solid communication skills, creative thinking, and high collaboration, with a positive response to change and new ideas. 

• Fluency in Spanish and English.

• A law degree is required.
