Job Description

Room 8 Studio seeks a highly experienced Material Artist (Advanced Middle/Senior level) for its Environment & Props team. Responsibilities include developing realistic game materials using procedural and 3D sculpted techniques, defining material workflows, building a studio material library, working with game engines and real-time rendering software, collaborating with other art teams, creating documentation and tutorials, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring efficient texture creation within hardware and design limitations. The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in Substance Designer/Painter, PBR rendering, UV layout, and high-poly sculpting software (ZBrush & Maya), and will have a proven track record in AAA game development.
Must have:
  • 3+ years AAA game dev experience
  • Expert in Substance Designer/Painter
  • PBR rendering & lighting knowledge
  • Low-poly mesh & UV techniques
  • High-poly sculpting (ZBrush, Maya)
  • Excellent communication skills

We are looking for a highly qualified and experienced Material Artist to join our Environment & Props team. In this role, you will develop materials that enhance realism in our games. You will help define material and asset workflows, improve current practices, and build a library of materials that can be utilized by all art disciplines.

Superpowers
you have are

  • 3+ years of experience in AAA game development or credit on at least one AAA title as a material artist;
  • Portfolio demonstrating a wide variety of tiled and one-to-one materials created using both procedural and 3d sculpted techniques and showing attention to detail, plausibility and an aesthetic eye;
  • Expert skills in Substance Designer/Painter;
  • Solid understanding of PBR rendering and the interaction between materials and lighting;
  • Experience working with game engines and various real-time rendering software;
  • Solid understanding of efficient low poly mesh techniques;
  • Strong UV layout techniques;
  • Understanding of Texel density, memory limitations, etc.;
  • Ability to follow concept/reference and work with a wide range of styles with minimal concept and direction;
  • Strong understanding of modular-level creation methods;
  • Experience with high poly sculpting and modeling software such as Z-Brush & Maya;
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative mindset to work in dynamic, creative environments;
  • Intermediate+ English level (written and spoken) for seamless collaboration and documentation.

As a part of Room 8
studio, you will

  • Work closely with leads and art teams to create high-fidelity materials via Substance Designer/Painter;
  • Build and maintain the studio’s Substance library of materials & utilities;
  • Build and maintain complex in-engine materials using a proprietary material editor;
  • Work with the Art Manager and Production team to deliver time estimates for texture/material creation;
  • Research new tools and techniques to create more efficient and visually appealing environments;
  • Create documentation & tutorials, and requirements for the new pipelines & techniques;
  • Collaborate with 3D artists, designers, and other development teams to understand and meet the content creator needs of the game;
  • Create environment assets and scenes while considering hardware and design limitations and the overall art vision of the project;
  • Mentor less experienced members of the team.
