About the job

Job Description

As a member of Google’s Government Affairs and Public Policy team, you'll be part of a diverse global government affairs team, working across regions, product areas, and functions. You’ll combine creativity and intellectual excellence with the organizational skills to manage various campaigns, projects and initiatives. In this role, you’ll advocate for Google to bring external perspectives back into the company to inform our perception and direction. You're passionate about the opportunity to shape the future of how we use and build technology for everyone. Google takes its responsibilities seriously, including engaging with government and other stakeholders on important public policy challenges. The Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) team leads the company’s engagement with executive branch officials, legislators, regulators and third-parties in the formation of public policy. Working closely with Google leaders, GAPP seeks to identify key policy issues, listen carefully to others’ views and opinions, and distill and share the company’s perspective on those issues with external stakeholders. While we focus on challenges affecting the internet, our issue areas are increasingly broad and encompass many areas where public policy, business, and technology intersect. Responsibilities: Support outreach and engage directly with policymakers, regulators, industry players, and key opinion formers in thoughtful dialogue on copyright and media policy issues. Support the analysis and response to legislative and regulatory proposals, including helping to develop negotiating positions and strategy. Work closely with Legal, Product, Engineering, Trust and Safety, and other teams across Google to advise on copyright and media policy issues, legislative and regulatory risks and opportunities, and responsible policy and product development. Advocate for Google externally and bring external perspectives back into the company to inform our perception and direction. Monitor and research current and relevant emerging public policy issues, with a focus on Europe. Develop policy positions, papers, and principles to shape the public debate regarding copyright and media policy issues.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Political Science, Government, Public Affairs, or a relevant field
  • 7 years of experience working on technology or content policy issues
  • Experience in European copyright or media policy issues
  • Experience successfully executing cross-functional projects
  • Experience working with diverse international teams
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in a rapidly changing and fast-paced environment
  • Excellent political, problem-solving, and communication skills
Good to have:
  • Experience working with a variety of stakeholders and executing strategies to deliver exceptional solutions
  • Ability to identify opportunities and areas for improvement
  • Ability to lead and evaluate issues independently
  • High attention to detail

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Law, Political Science, Government, Public Affairs, or a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience working on technology or content policy issues within industry, government, think tanks, public interest groups, or relevant industry associations on challenges related to copyright, intellectual property, and media/publisher policy issues.
  • Experience in European copyright or media policy issues, including but not limited to the EU Copyright Directive.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience successfully executing cross-functional projects.
  • Experience working with diverse international teams and a variety of stakeholders and executing strategies to deliver exceptional solutions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in a rapidly changing and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to identify opportunities and areas for improvement, and lead and evaluate issues independently.
  • Excellent political, problem-solving, and communication skills, with high attention to detail.
