The Principal Software Engineering Manager at Microsoft Defender for Endpoint will provide technical leadership in architecture, design, code reviews, and development, while leading and growing a high-performing engineering team. Responsibilities include mentoring, hiring, and fostering a positive team environment. The role requires expertise in cloud services, ideally Azure, and experience with large-scale system development. This involves shipping high-quality, secure, and maintainable code, collaborating across teams, and communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The candidate should be proficient in languages like C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python and have experience with automated build systems and compilers. This hybrid role is based in Redmond, Washington.

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineering Manager to help drive innovation and excellence. As an engineering manager on the team, you will improve services by leveraging some of the latest innovations in Microsoft software and Azure hardware. This is a dynamic role that involves both technical knowledge and collaborative skills to contribute to the modernization and enhancement of Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's cloud services.

This Hybrid Position is located at our Microsoft office in Redmond, Washington. Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the field location.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years people management experience of a software team
  • 6+ years industry experience on large scale system architecture, design, development, testing and release of full product lifecycle

Other Requirements:

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • Project Management Experience
  • Experience in Azure Cloud, Azure DevOps for Project Tracking or Source Control Systems
  • Experience with automated build systems & compilers
Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills and ability to work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other engineers.   
  • Clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.  
  • Work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changing requirements and deadlines.  
  • Collaborate and contribute to a positive, inclusive work environment, fostering knowledge sharing and growth within the team.
