The Senior Engineer-Controls at Reedy Creek Energy Services (RCES) will provide engineering services for capital improvement projects, ensuring alignment with department goals. This role involves designing, operating, and maintaining low-voltage control systems, developing construction drawings and specifications, and integrating various control systems into a PLC system. Responsibilities include coordinating with multi-discipline teams, developing commissioning plans, creating preventative maintenance programs, providing innovative solutions for specialized equipment, and writing operational procedures. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in PLC's, VFDs, fiber optics, and data acquisition systems, with a strong background in industrial or utility automation.
Must have:
  • 5+ years experience in industrial automation and control system design & implementation
  • Experience in specifying, designing, and installing PLC hardware and software
  • Experience with fiber optic equipment, cabling, and infrastructure
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, MS Word, and Excel
  • Ability to work in various environments (outdoors and plant)
Good to have:
  • Working knowledge of chilled water, hot water, potable water, wastewater, compressed air, and natural gas utilities
  • Familiarity with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Systems
  • Practical field experience with utility infrastructure

Come join us as a Senior Engineer-Controls for the Planning & Sustaining Team at Reedy Creek Energy Services (RCES) which is a small team of highly trained and skilled engineers responsible for providing engineering oversight for over 40 square miles of utility infrastructure serving the Walt Disney Company.  As the Senior Engineer - Controls you will provide engineering services to support the portfolio of capital improvement projects, ensuring consistency with department strategy, commitments, and goals. This role will be the primary asset owner responsible for sustainment of and the development of strategic plans supporting process control and communication systems.  

The Senior Engineer - Controls, will be a direct report to the Planning & Sustaining Engineering Team Lead, RCES Engineering & Programs.

This position will be a full-time, in the office position in Orlando, FL.

You Will

  • Assist in the design, operation, maintenance, installation and testing of low-voltage control systems.

  • Assist in the development of construction level drawings and specifications for control panel and field wiring designs including equipment and material specifications, detailed diagrams/schematics, point to point wiring, one line diagram for all communication and control wiring/schemes, installation details.

  • Understand mechanical, electrical, and plumbing diagrams, control diagrams, plant operation, control circuits, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).

  • Assist with integrating mechanical, electrical, plumbing and infrastructure controls systems into a PLC system.

  • Coordinate with multi-discipline design teams to perform, implement and design the process and sequence of operations to utility system equipment including hardware and software modifications to improve safety, reliability and operation of all utility control systems.

  • Develop the requirements and technical oversight over all commissioning, software bench tests, software factory acceptance tests, and equipment factory witness tests.

  • Develop robust preventative maintenance and asset refurbishment and replacement programs for instruments and control systems and components associated with monitoring, control, data acquisition, metering, fiber optic cabling, and other activities associated with utility production and distribution.

  • Provide innovative solutions to specialized equipment operating in harsh environments that challenge the operation and maintenance teams.

  • Write procedures to address both routine tasks as well as troubleshooting specialized equipment and systems during failures.

  • Function as the in-house expert for monitoring systems, instrumentation, metering equipment, and data acquisition and control systems.

  • Prepare and review equipment specifications and evaluate new products and services.

  • Support the preparation of system or equipment control studies, reports, and standard. This may be self-performed or managing engineering consultants.

You Will Have

  • 5+ years of applicable education or experience in industrial or utility automation and control system design and implementation.

  • 5+ years of applicable experience in specifying, designing and installing hardware, instrumentation wiring and software review for PLC’s.

  • Experience in specifying, designing, documenting and maintaining fiber optic equipment, cabling and physical plant infrastructure.

  • Experience in the design and review of wiring diagrams, development of control requirements and programs.

  • Proficient at AutoCAD, MS Word and Excel in creating drawings and documents from scratch or site surveys.

  • Ability to work in a variety of work environments, including outdoors and in a plant environment.

  • Must be available to work outside normal work hours in response to job demand, equipment availability, and system/equipment emergencies as required including in adverse weather events.

  • Ability to manage workload and balance constantly evolving priorities while maintaining productivity.

  • Able to work individually or as part of a team to develop new control schemes, support existing schemes, and test and evaluate equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the following production and distribution facilities: Chilled Water, Hot Water, Potable Water, Wastewater or Compressed Air and Natural Gas Utility.

  • Familiarity with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Systems.

  • Practical field experience (start-up and commissioning, maintenance, etc.) with the above preferred qualification utilities and infrastructure.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or comparable discipline is required.

  • Master's degree in applicable discipline is preferred.
