The Windows Silicon and Systems Integration team at Microsoft seeks a Senior Software Engineer with experience in developing Windows OS drivers and firmware for ARM SOCs. This role involves close collaboration with hardware and software architects and Windows OS teams. Responsibilities include system integration, platform creation and maintenance, ensuring platform stability and performance, and contributing to overall software release quality. The engineer will design and develop embedded firmware, run code in simulated environments, work with silicon partners on debugging, develop and execute validation plans, provide code reviews, and contribute to the creation of innovative experiences and devices.
Must have:
  • 4+ years experience in software engineering
  • 2+ years Windows driver development
  • 2+ years ARM processor and firmware development
  • C/C++, embedded firmware and driver development
  • System integration and validation
Good to have:
  • Experience with GIT, ADO
  • Understanding of ARM processor family

Senior Software Engineer -Windows Silicon & Systems Integration

 

Microsoft Windows Silicon & Systems Integration team (WSSI) is on a journey to deliver iconic end-to-end products across hardware, software, and services that people love and use every day. The Windows Silicon and Systems integration team is seeking a talented Senior Software Engineer with a solid background in developing windows OS driver and firmware for ARM SOCs. The development engineer in this role will be working closely with hardware and software architects as well as Windows OS teams.

 

This individual will also actively contribute to system integration, platform creations, maintenance, platform stability, performance & overall software release quality.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years Industry Experience in designing, developing, debugging and shipping low-level drivers on Windows.
  • 2+ years Indsutry Experience with ARM processor family and firmware development on ARM processors.

Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with software version control systems (such as GIT, ADO, etc.) for large scale software development.
  • Understanding of ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) processor family and software development on ARM processors.
  • Experience in C/C++ developing embedded firmware and/or device drivers.
  • Familiarity with the System on Chip (SOC) Hardware architecture and its impact on device and software development cycles.
  • Experience in device/board bring-up on Windows. 
  • Solid understanding of software lifecycle in a device development environment and the interplay between software and hardware development and schedules.
  • Knowledge of UEFI, ARM trust zone, Bootloaders, Board support packages (BSP), Power, Performance and Thermal is a plus.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in cross-functional teams.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded firmware features to meet requirements in pre and post-silicon environments.
  • Run code in simulated or other non-production environments to confirm functionality and error-free runtime across products.
  • Work with silicon partners and internal engineering teams on triaging & debugging system issues.  
  • Develop and execute software integration and validation plan by actively collaborating with cross functional engineering teams.  
  • Provide feedback to peers in design and code reviews.
