As a Senior Staff Application Architect at Anthology, you'll provide architectural oversight for Blackboard Core and Premium offerings. The role requires strong experience in software development, object-oriented design, Java, AWS, and database modeling, along with excellent communication and collaboration skills.

As Senior Staff Application Architect, you will be a member of the Blackboard Architecture team, tasked with architectural oversight of Anthology’s Blackboard Core and Premium offerings. This position guides the architectural direction of our products; is involved in identifying and tracking current risks and future trends; gets hands-on with solution design, vetting 3rd parties, and complex coding and triaging; and is a self-driven technology leader capable of collaboration and clear communication.

 

You will partner with various development teams, product managers, and UX designers to foster the delivery of modern Teaching & Learning capabilities. Finally, you will aid in research of new technologies, explore innovation opportunities using AI, and design cloud native technology stacks for new service development.

 

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with teams on emerging architectural needs, developing requirements and plans for adoption of new services and improved applications
  • Striving for continuous improvement covering technical aspects as well as processes
  • Mentoring developers through training, code reviews, and other forums to continuously improve the team’s skills and mindset
  • Aiding other architects and development teams in the design, implementation, and delivery of new functional capabilities
  • Researching emerging technologies from AWS and other SaaS providers and evaluating potential adoption
  • Communicating architectural plans and changes to various stakeholders in the organization
  • Creating technical documents for primarily for internal use and occasionally for customer-facing purposes
  • Tackling complex technical challenges, providing expertise and guidance to resolve critical issues
  • Providing architectural support for the integration of diverse systems and technologies across the enterprise landscape

 

The Candidate:

Required skills/qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience
  • 12-15 years of relevant experience in software development
  • Exceptional understanding of object-oriented design, Enterprise Java coding skills, and relational database patterns and concepts
  • Experience with AWS cloud technology, particularly Serverless Platform Services
  • Experience with web application development (Java, Node.js, Python), JavaScript libraries/frameworks (such as React/Vue, CSS3, HTML5)
  • Experience designing SQL and NoSQL database models
  • Knowledge of REST API design and Event Driven Architecture
  • Strong problem-solving ability in large, complex systems
  • A passion for innovation, learning, and sharing knowledge
  • Strong communication skills, a proven track record of building consensus across larger organizations, and the ability to foster strong cross-team collaboration on technical topics
  • Fluency in written and spoken English

 

Preferred skills/qualifications:

  • Demonstrable experience with managed AI services like OpenAI or AWS Bedrock
  • Cloud certification such as AWS Certified Solution Architect or equivalent
  • Experience with security standards like StateRAMP, FedRAMP, and ISO 27000
  • Experience working in a regionally distributed Agile development environment

Pay range is $170,200 - $215,000/year depending upon experience. We use national and industry-specific survey data to assist in determining compensation. Additionally, we consider factors such as external market rate, budget for the role, and the compensation rates of current employees performing the same function. Some roles will have variable pay.
