Job Description

The Government Relations Adviser role at Telstra involves aligning with internal stakeholders and corporate strategy to engage with government agencies. This position supports the Government Relations team in building and maintaining strategic relationships with government and political stakeholders. Key responsibilities include identifying advocacy opportunities, managing political issues and risks, and delivering outcomes beneficial to both Telstra and the government. The role also assists in resolving escalated customer complaints raised via Members of Parliament, developing briefing materials for executives, maintaining government relations databases, and supporting advocacy campaigns and team strategy. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the Australian federal government's processes and experience in political or corporate affairs.
Must have:

About the Role

The Government Relations Adviser aligns with relevant internal stakeholders, Telstra’s business objectives and corporate strategy, and engages with government stakeholders to support the execution of the Company's strategy.

The role supports the Government Relations team and Telstra to build and maintains strategic government and stakeholder relationships by:

  • Identify issues opportunites to advocate for Telstra and improve Telstra’s reputation with political stakeholders.
  • Manage political and stakeholder issues (strategy, risks and opportunities) facing the company.
  • Support identification of opportunities and delivery of outcomes that benefit both Telstra and the Government.

What You’ll Do

  • Further Telstra's strategy building and maintaining relationships with government stakeholders and their offices, and connect them with senior executives and relevant internal stakeholders to promote Telstra’s actions and reputation.  
  • Assist in the resolution of escalated customer complaints and electorate issues that are raised via MPs 
  • Support executive attendance and meetings and events through developing high quality briefing materials.  
  • Maintain databases and reports relating to government relations activities.  
  • Support the GR team to deliver advocacy campaigns, communications materials and events.  
  • Assist in developing and progressing the GR team’s strategy, planning and collaboration.  

About You

You will be bringing these skills & experiences to be succesful in the role:

  • Understanding of the processes of federal government in Australia
  • Solid experience (2-5 years) in an electorate office, ministerial office or within corporate affairs, government relations or external affairs roles, ideally within a corporate environment or a political office
  • Accomplished communication, stakeholder engagement, issues management and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated strategy and project management skills
  • Strong resiliency, business acumen and attention to detail underpinned by pro-activeness and flexibility
  • A self-starter who is comfortable operating in a small team and an environment of ambiguity and change and demonstrates a singlemindedness in delivery of outcomes
