Gearbox Studio seeks an experienced Senior Technical Artist to join their team. You will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the art production pipeline in Unreal Engine 5. Collaboration with artists and engineers, development of tools, optimization of assets, and resolving technical issues are key responsibilities. This role requires a self-driven individual with a deep understanding of Unreal Engine 5 and a minimum of 7 years of experience in AAA game development.
Must have:
  • Minimum 7 years AAA game development experience
  • In-depth Unreal Engine 5 experience
  • Blueprint scripting, shader development, environment creation skills
  • Independent work, task prioritization, ownership of technical art pipeline
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience optimizing 3D assets, shaders, and environments
Good to have:
  • Familiarity with Maya, 3ds Max, Substance Painter
  • Experience with Lumen, Nanite, Niagara, and Blueprints in Unreal Engine 5
  • Knowledge of C#, C++, Python, HLSL, GLSL
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling tools like Houdini, 3dsMax, Maya, Blender, ZBrush
  • Proficiency in Houdini, Unreal PGG or similar procedural generation tools

Gearbox Studio, the game developer of successful titles such as Borderlands, Brothers In Arms, and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, is looking for an experienced Senior Technical Artist to join our team. As a generalist with extensive experience in AAA game development and a deep understanding of Unreal Engine 5, you’ll play a critical role in bridging the gap between our engineering and art teams.  

 

This role requires a self-driven, autonomous professional to lead the design and development of our pipeline.

RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Design, build, and maintain a comprehensive art production pipeline tailored to our project’s needs in Unreal Engine 5.  
  • Collaborate closely with both artists and engineers to streamline workflows, improving efficiency and enabling cross-department collaboration.   
  • Develop and maintain tools within Unreal Engine 5 to support the art team’s needs, from shader creation to asset management tools.  
  • Ensure assets and environments meet performance requirements; optimize shaders, materials, and assets for best visual quality within performance constraints. 
  • Identify and address technical issues, providing solutions that align with both art direction and game requirements. 
  • Produce clear documentation and training materials for tools and workflows and guide the art team on best practices. 

  

REQUIRED SKILLS  

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in AAA game development with a strong portfolio showcasing high-quality projects. 
  • In-depth experience with Unreal Engine 5, with strong technical skills in blueprint scripting, shader development, and environment creation. 
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and take ownership of the technical art pipeline. 
  • Strong communication skills to effectively work between art and engineering teams. 
  • Extensive experience optimizing 3D assets, shaders, and environments for maximum performance without compromising visual quality. 

  

DESIRED SKILLS  

  • Familiarity with software such as Maya, 3ds Max, or Substance Painter. 
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 5, including, for example, Lumen, Nanite, Niagara, and Blueprints  
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages (C#, C++, Python, HLSL, GLSL)  
  • Comfortable with one or more 3D modeling tools (Houdini, 3dsMax, Maya, Blender, ZBrush, etc.)  
  • Proficient in Houdini, Unreal PGG or any similar procedural generation tool.
