This Software Engineer II role focuses on providing foundational security services for Government clouds within Microsoft's Security organization. Responsibilities include designing and engineering systems, driving efficiencies through software improvements, proactively identifying and reducing issues, and implementing end-to-end telemetry and automation. The role requires collaboration with various teams, participation in on-call rotations, and experience with high-throughput, multi-tenant services. Candidates must have experience with coding languages (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python), and a strong understanding of cloud security principles. The position requires an active U.S. Government Top Secret Clearance with SCI access.

We are hiring a Software Engineer II for to join our combined DevOps team which focuses on providing foundational security services for the Government clouds. Our team provides leadership, direction, and accountability for cloud design, service architecture, engineering infrastructure, and data platform development. You will help conduct business reviews and operate our production services. Collaboration skills will be required to work closely with other engineering teams to ensure services and systems are highly stable, meet performance Service level agreements (SLA), and meet the expectations of internal and external customers and users. The job of the Azure Security team is to ensure that Azure is the most secure and resilient cloud platform. The team owns core security services spanning across the stack of Azure, providing low level platform security as well as protection for customer applications running at cloud scale. Our organization is responsible for core distributed security infrastructure including key management, disk encryption and data protection, Trusted Launch, and attestation of the platform as well as customer VMs, Azure Confidential Computing infrastructure services, Linux security, and other security capabilities for the Azure ecosystem. Our team’s focus is on the attestation services to include Microsoft Azure Attestation, Trusted Hardware Identity Management, and Host Attestation Service. Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience

Other Requirements: 
Security Clearance Requirements: Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • The successful candidate must have an active U.S. Government Top Secret Clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with Polygraph. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. Failure to maintain or obtain the appropriate U.S. Government clearance and/or customer screening requirements may result in employment action up to and including termination.
  • Clearance Verification: This position requires successful verification of the stated security clearance to meet federal government customer requirements. You will be asked to provide clearance verification information prior to an offer of employment.
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter
  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local United States government agency customer and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport, or other approved documents, or verified US government Clearance 

 

Preferred Qualifications:
Full stack web development experience. Understanding and experience with CI/CD concepts, Azure DevOps, and Git/GitHub tooling. 2+ years of Windows / Linux hands on system experiences. Experience debugging issues ranging from the operating system, application, and all the way to the cloud. Experienced in solving operational issues in a scalable way. Ability to thrive with the ambiguity associated with working in a fast-paced and changing environment. Support a 24x7 live site support model for the services the team owns. Some experience with building and supporting large-scale production services, including logging, monitoring, alerting, and measuring reliability and availability. Proficient in at least one scripting language but knows when to move solutions into managed code. Demonstrated communication skills and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Software Engineers, Program Managers, Security Researchers, and Data Scientists.

 

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

We are looking for passionate people with experiences working with all service aspects of high throughput and multi-tenant services, ability to design components carefully, properly handle errors, write clean and well-factored code with good tests and good maintainability.    Responsibilities include:

  • Defining well thought out design patterns and code with an emphasis on quality, simplicity, maintainability, and performance Engineering systems.
  • Driving efficiencies through software improvement and root cause analysis resulting in service delivery, maturity, and scalability.
  • Proactively identifying and reducing issues through design, testing, and implementation of software-based solutions.
  • Identify opportunities and drive the design and implementation of end-to-end telemetry, alerting, self-healing, and automation capabilities to improve service health, manageability, and reliability.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation (typically 24/7 for one week every 6-8 weeks) within a secure facility.
