Summary

As a Database Engineer, you'll administer NoSQL database platforms (MongoDB, Cassandra, Elasticsearch) in public and private cloud environments. Responsibilities include ensuring database uptime, security, and scalability, supporting blockchain payments and analytics systems, automating tasks, and collaborating with development teams. You'll participate in the entire development lifecycle, promoting automation, continuous delivery, and an 'everything as code' mentality. You will also handle complex tasks like Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) and data migrations. The role involves 24/7 on-call support.
Must have:
  • 2+ years experience as Database Engineer (MongoDB/Cassandra)
  • Experience with Elasticsearch and public clouds
  • DevOps/automation skills (Ansible or similar)
  • Scripting (Python, Bash, Java etc.)
  • Linux system administration
  • Git and CI/CD tools
  • Knowledge of containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
Good to have:
  • Data warehousing experience (Clickhouse, BigQuery, DuckDB)
  • Experience with OpenStack, GCP, or AWS

Previous blockchain experience, while desirable, is not required and so this is an excellent opportunity for anybody who has an interest in growing their skills and experience in this novel and fast-moving field.


Your mission

As a Database Engineer, you will administer our database platforms to ensure they remain online, secure, right-sized and have appropriate HADR solutions. This includes supporting blockchain payments and analytics based system built on MongoDB, Cassandra and Elasticsearch hosted in both public and private clouds.

You will manage database across multiple data centres and cloud environments, automating routine tasks like patching and configuration management to free up time for more strategic engineering related initiatives.

What you'll do

  • You will support our development lifecycle through feasibility, design and delivery to ensure the solutions we provide are automated, robust, scalable, maintainable and secure.
  • You will promote and collaborate in the creation of solutions to drive automation, environment consistency, continuous delivery with an "everything as code" mentality.
  • When appropriate you will lead on complex database tasks such as Information Lifecycle Management (ILM), very large table modifications, advanced query tuning and data-migrations
  • Use your training budget and work time to keep up to date, and sometimes drive industry data platform trends and technology adoption.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, application development teams, and with business stakeholders.
  • Cross train peers in database development and administration. They will do the same for you.
  • Provide out of hours production support as part of a 24/7 rota.

What you'll bring

  • At least 2 years’ experience working as a Database Engineer supporting MongoDB and/or Cassandra in a Production Environment. 
  • Experience supporting Elasticsearch
  • Public cloud experience using OpenStack, GCP or AWS
  • A DevOps / automation first mindset, with experience using deployments with Ansible (or similar automation tool for config/admin)
  • Practical Experience of the following using scripting languages or programming frameworks (Python, Bash, Java, etc)
  • System administration and tuning of Linux-based servers
  • Strong working knowledge and experience using code versioning tools like Git.
  • Experience configuring and using CI/CD Tools (AWX/Gitlab/ArgoCD)
  • Knowledge of containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes) concepts
  • Experience supporting data warehousing (ODS/OLAP) technologies like Clickhouse, GCP BigQuery or DuckDB is desirable, but not a pre-requisite.
  • Willingness to work as part of a 24/7 on-call rota.
  • A team player mindset with ability to work autonomously in a dynamic environment and willing to take multiple initiatives forward at the same time
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills
