Summary

As a JavaScript Department Lead at Evolution, you'll blend leadership and hands-on development. Responsibilities include team leadership and development (mentoring, performance reviews, goal setting), talent acquisition and onboarding, designing and implementing features for next-gen games, resolving complex systems issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. You'll deliver high-quality code, improve team workflows, and act as a global frontend development ambassador. This role requires expertise in JavaScript frameworks (React, Node.js), modern development methodologies, and CI/CD pipelines.

Job Description

As a JavaScript Department Lead, you will play a pivotal role in driving technical excellence while nurturing talent and fostering a collaborative culture. This hybrid role blends leadership with hands-on development, offering you the chance to make a direct impact on both the product and the people behind it.

Responsibilities: 

  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Inspire and guide your team through organisational changes and challenges, providing mentorship and motivation.
    • Conduct 1:1s, deliver constructive feedback, and manage 360-degree reviews.
    • Set measurable goals and OKRs, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
    • Identify training needs and support professional growth for team members.
  • Talent Acquisition & Onboarding:
    • Lead hiring initiatives to attract top-tier talent.
    • Ensure a seamless onboarding experience for team members.
  • Engineering Excellence:
    • Design and implement features that power next-gen games and the platform behind them.
    • Deliver clean, high-quality code through rigorous testing and attention to detail.
    • Diagnose and resolve complex systems issues
    • Proactively identify and address obstacles to team productivity by implementing solutions that improve workflows, provide clear guidance, and streamline processes.
  • Collaborative Innovation:
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into technical solutions.
    • Act as Ambassador for Frontend Development initiatives on a global scale.

This role assumes your time is shared between individual contributor activities as well as leadership activities.

Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience in delivering IT projects, with a deep understanding of industry best practices.
  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Node.js) and libraries, with a strong grasp of modern development methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and scalable architecture principles as applied to Evolution products.
  • Excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

We will appreciate:

  • A proven track record of leading, motivating, and developing teams, as well as attracting and retaining top talent.
  • Experience with React (or similar DOM libraries), Mobx, Redux, RxJS, Babylon.js, PixiJS, ThreeJS, HTML Canvas, modular CSS, testing libraries (Jest, RTL, Playwright, WebdriverIO), and JavaScript ecosystem tools (Webpack, npm, Yarn).
