Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Servus, hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, Australia but Austria is home to part of our European operations. And you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

Fun fact, a big part of our Austrian operations is developing the AI product within Canva to help reimagine how artificial intelligence can be used in design. Pretty cool ha!

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Porting experimental Python code to scalable and testable production code.
  • Interfacing machine learning models with our Java backend code.
  • Deploying new machine learning models in our AWS-based computing system.
  • Optimizing code structure and speed of our machine-learning code.
  • Helping update documentation and sharing best practices and guidelines for Python engineering.
  • Investigating and fixing production incidents by participating in our on-call roster.
  • Communicating with stakeholders across the business, particularly other groups with similar challenges, to innovate better ways for production-grade performant solutions.

You're probably a match if

  • You have a solid grasp of engineering and are committed to delivering tools of high quality and reliability.
  • You have commercial experience developing applications in Python; experience with other languages, such as Java and TypeScript, is a plus.
  • Ideally, you have a solid understanding of machine learning, have worked with PyTorch, and know how to optimize such codes for speed.
  • You have disciplined coding practices and are experienced with code reviews and pull requests.
  • You have experience working in cloud environments, ideally AWS.
  • You have demonstrated self-motivation and ownership over complex problems and their solutions, with a strong sense of accountability.
  • You are a good communicator and a team player and are eager to work together with your colleagues to brainstorm ideas.

About the team

Our team is called Design Generation EU, and we generate graphic designs with machine learning and deliver these solutions to our users. We combine research and engineering to make complex design accessible to everyone. The team consists of applied scientists and backend and frontend engineers, and we need you to transform experimental machine learning models into scalable, sustainable, and testable production systems. By developing innovative solutions, we support Canva's vision to "Empower the world to design."

What's in it for you?

Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard - and we do - but you'll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a range of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work.
