Gearbox Entertainment seeks a Senior Sound Designer to create high-quality sound effects for their games. Responsibilities include designing, mixing, and editing audio in a DAW; Foley and field recording; implementing sound effects in Wwise and Unreal 5; collaborating with other departments; participating in sound jams; and bug fixing. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of AAA game sound design experience, including at least one project completed as a Senior Sound Designer. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential, along with expertise in DAWs, Wwise, and sound recording techniques. The role involves a significant commitment to original source material recording.
Must have:

  • Experience with sound library management
Good to have:
  • Formal audio training/degree
  • Scripting/programming experience

This is a Senior Sound Designer position. We seek an individual who is not only creative and passionate about sound design but also brings a fresh perspective to the table. At Gearbox, our audio team is deeply committed to recording original source material—not just to expand our library, but as the foundation of our sound design. We believe that transforming organic and familiar sounds into genres like sci-fi and synthetic creates a stronger connection with the listener. Our facilities include control rooms, an Atmos mix room, and an in-house Foley stage equipped with a diverse selection of microphones and recorders. This role will involve dedicating time each week to both prop and field recording.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Design, mix, and edit audio within a DAW to create original high quality sound effects for in-game features, systems, and assets.
  • Foley and Field recording.  
  • Complex sound design tasks. Will be expected to handle the most forefront game feature sets of audio design such as weapons, character audio, and more.   
  • Delivers assets within a timely fashion and hitting a high quality bar. 
  • Implementation of sound effects into Wwise and Unreal 5, with an adept understanding of how those assets fit into a game mix. 
  • Coordinating and collaborating directly with other departments such as design, fx, programming, or animation on needs for tasks and system development. 
  • Participation and contribution in audio department sound jams. 
  • Use of JIRA for task and bug tracking. 
  • Locate and fix audio related bugs. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • 5+ years in the industry working as a AAA sound design for games.
  • Has contributed to at least one project from start to finish as a Senior Sound Designer or in a comparable role.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Must be skilled in providing and accepting constructive feedback.
  • Adept ability at mixing, editing, and audio design techniques in a DAW such as Reaper, ProTools, or Nuendo. 
  • Up to date with game industry trends and modern sound design techniques for games. 
  • In depth knowledge of audio middleware applications such as Wwise and FMOD. 
  • Familiarity with sound library organizational and storage applications such as SoundMiner or Basehead. 
  • Experienced with recording techniques using microphones and portable recorders such as ones created by Zoom or Sound Devices. 
  • Well versed at how to create clear and thorough documentation such as style guides or system documentation. 
  • Knowledge of mix specifications in a variety of media. 


Bonus: 

  • Formal Audio training and/or degree in audio production.
  • Experience with scripting or programming languages. 
  • Professional post production experience in Film, TV, or Ads, particularly with multichannel environments (I.e. Surround or ATMOS) 
  • Experience with authoring content in expanded spatial formats such as ambisonics / HRTF or ATMOS.
