Description

We are looking for a Senior Director of Engineering – Head of Game Tools. This is a critical leadership role responsible for the technical strategy, architecture, and execution of tools that enable efficient and innovative game content creation.

At Scopely, we care deeply about what we do and want to inspire play, every day - whether in our work environments alongside our talented colleagues, or through our deep connections with our communities of players. We are a global team of game lovers who are developing, publishing and innovating the gaming industry, connecting millions of people around the world daily.

This role focuses on building scalable, user-friendly tools that empower designers, artists, and technical teams to create high-quality game content while optimizing workflows and supporting production at all stages, from pre-production through Live Operations. The ideal candidate has extensive AAA game development experience and possesses deep technical knowledge of game development tooling, from scripting systems and API development to architecting robust tools that align with the needs of the game, engine, and creative teams.

What you will do:
Technical Leadership & Strategy:
  • Define and own the technical vision and roadmap for game tooling, ensuring alignment with the creative and production goals of the platform.
  • Architect robust, scalable tools and systems that support scripting, API development, and real-time 3D content workflows.
  • Ensure tools are designed with flexibility and extensibility to adapt to evolving game and engine requirements.
  • Drive an iterative execution cycle to meet project milestones while improving quality and depth of tooling over time
  • Research and incorporate industry trends and advancements to maintain a competitive edge in tooling.
Tool Development & Optimization:
  • Drive the creation of tools to support all aspects of game content creation, including level design, asset workflows, animation, and technical design.
  • Oversee the development of tools that integrate seamlessly with our game engine and the Digital Content Creation (DCC) ecosystem
  • Design systems that expose APIs and scripting interfaces, enabling both technical and non-technical users to achieve their goals efficiently.
  • Drive technical innovation in tools development, leveraging modern technologies to enhance workflows and enable new creative possibilities. Ensure tools and pipelines are scalable to meet the needs of a growing platform and complex production environments.
Collaboration Across Disciplines:
  • Partner closely with design, art, production, and engineering teams to identify needs and prioritize tools development.
  • Collaborate with engine teams to ensure that underlying architecture supports robust and efficient tooling.
  • Advocate for tools improvements that enhance productivity and creative flexibility across teams.
  • Establish and promote best practices in tools engineering, ensuring high-quality code, robust documentation, and intuitive usability.
What you will need:
  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven success in tools or pipeline development for Live Operated AAA games, game engines, or large-scale creative platforms.
  • Experience working with 3rd party content studios and familiarity with their needs.
  • Extensive experience with Unity and Unity toolchains
  • Strong programming skills (C++, C#) and deep understanding of systems architecture.
  • Expertise in scripting systems, API development, modding, and integrating tools with game engines.
  • Familiarity with DCC tools (e.g., Maya, Blender, Houdini) and workflows for content creation.
  • Deep understanding of game content creation cycles, including level design, asset workflows, and animation pipelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to define a technical vision and align cross-functional teams around it.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, bridging technical and creative disciplines.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
  • Delivery of tools that meet creative and production goals within established timelines and budgets.
  • Efficiency and satisfaction of internal and 3rd party teams using the tools.
  • Scalability, performance, and quality of the tools.
  • Adoption and seamless integration of tools across disciplines.
For candidates in CA, CO, MD, NJ, NY and WA, the annual salary range is $223,000 - $281,400, plus equity, bonus and benefits including healthcare benefits, retirement benefits, pet insurance, paid holidays, paid Scopely free days, and unlimited paid time-off.
