Buffalo Buffalo, a Vancouver-based game studio specializing in high-polish, creatively ambitious indie games, is seeking a freelance concept artist. The studio's 20-person team focuses on creating unforgettable player experiences through innovative mechanics, emerging technology, and narrative depth. This role involves creating high-quality concept art for characters and robots to guide 3D and animation teams, emphasizing imaginative silhouettes, mechanical detail, and expressive character personality. The artist will be responsible for developing original robot character concepts, collaborating with creative leads, producing clean linework and renders, maintaining design consistency, and creating reference sheets for production.
Must have:
  • Strong portfolio in stylized robotic/tech concepts
  • Excellent drawing, rendering, and design skills
  • Ability to translate narrative/gameplay into visuals
  • Proficient in Photoshop
Good to have:
  • Experience with isometric/top-down aesthetics
  • Familiarity with sci-fi/post-industrial themes
  • Experience designing environments

Freelance Concept Artist

Buffalo Buffalo is a Vancouver-based game studio focused on high-polish, creatively ambitious indie games. Our 20-person team blends innovative mechanics, emerging technology, and narrative depth into unforgettable player experiences. We work a 4-day workweek and maintain a hybrid model—Tuesdays and Fridays are in-office, with the rest of the time remote.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a talented freelance concept artist with a strong portfolio in character and robotic design to support the development of a stylized game world. You will be responsible for creating high-quality concept art that guides our 3D and animation teams, with a focus on imaginative silhouettes, mechanical detail, and expressive character personality.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop original concept art for robots characters based on design briefs and worldbuilding direction

  • Collaborate with creative leads to iterate on designs and visual tone

  • Produce clean linework, grayscale values, and/or color renders depending on the asset needs

  • Maintain design consistency across different character classes and factions

  • Create reference sheets and callouts for 3D production handoff

Requirements

  • Strong portfolio showcasing stylized robotic and or tech concepts

  • Excellent drawing, rendering, and design skills

  • Ability to translate narrative or gameplay goals into visual storytelling

  • Experience with isometric, top-down, or stylized aesthetics is a plus

  • Proficient in industry-standard tools (e.g., Photoshop…etc)

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Familiarity with sci-fi, post-industrial, or tactical visual themes

  • Experience designing environment
