Roles & Responsibilities:

As the Engineering Manager for the Cloud Support & Ops team (CSO) you'll be part of the larger Operational Engineering group who is responsible for building a truly global, self-service cloud platform (PaaS) to enable Global Tech’s growing number of engineering teams to build, deploy, run and operate their services in a fully autonomous fashion.

Your role will focus on setting team practices, goals and coaching. You embrace modern, rigorous software development practices that emphasize testability, repeatability, and self-service automation. You will help drive technical decision-making, in support of the global cloud platform. Your team focuses on performing non-incident, business hour troubleshooting, reviewing pull requests, following runbooks to provision new infrastructure, onboarding assistance and light-weight solution architecting.

  • First line support for Gobal Techs cloud-based developer platform, focusing on areas with heavy support load and manual processes.

  • Perform operations tasks like applying security patches to infrastructure and Terraform modules.

  • Approve pull requests, modify security rules, etc

  • Supports new product launches and adding new tenants and/or markets to the platform by provisioning new infrastructure like AWS resources, Ingress stack, etc following established runbooks.

  • Owns and manages documentation, runbooks, and decision trees for the supported areas.

  • Act as first point of contact for the internal engineering teams, guiding them through the intake process and if necessary, escalate support or feature requests to appropriate platform team.

  • Note that this team is required to work on a late shift, 16:00 – 24:00 IST 1-2 weeks per month in order to provide full business hour coverage of the Global Tech organization. During these shifts, you will be allowed to work fully remote or provided transportation from office to home.

What to Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of hands-on experience working on a Cloud environment

  • Hands-on experience with designing and maintaining Cloud infrastructure with at least one cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure, or other)

  • Hands-on experience with at least one IaC tool (e.g. CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation)

  • Hands-on experience from working in a support ticketing system following runbooks and decision trees for triaging

  • Experience with the development and operation of high throughput systems supporting hundreds of developers or more.

  • Hands-on experience with automating development workflow pipelines (CI/CD)

  • Operational experience (i.e. on-call rotation, incident response)

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with remote peers across disparate geographies and time zones.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with particular emphasis on technical documentation (including diagramming)

  • Ability to administer a team’s agile process (creating exemplary tickets in Jira, sprint planning, etc)

  • Ability to support a global organization that requires working the late shift, potentially up until midnight, a couple of weeks per month.

Who You Are

You bring passion and enthusiasm to your engineering team. You have a track record of leading top performing teams. You thrive under minimal supervision with the ability to self-motivate and self-organize within the organizational structure. You have experience managing a team that supports and operates a cloud-based platform. You measure everything, make decisions based on data, are consumer-focused, and take immense pride in your work.

The ideal candidate for this role will also match the following statements:

  • You have mastered the ability to delegate – at both the task and project level – to appropriate team members and are able to ensure that the right results are achieved even without your constant oversight.

  • You have worked as a Solution Architect, Operations Engineer, or similar, providing hands-on support for and guidance to external stakeholders.

  • Your written and verbal communication skills are top-notch. You can distill key points out of complex technical descriptions to share with non-technical stakeholders, adapting your language and style of communication depending on the audience. You communicate through data, dates, and facts using emotion judiciously to motivate and inspire.

  •  You lead by example and do not consider yourself above individual contributor work. You are comfortable teaching best practices by showing people, not just telling people. Teams follow your lead because you are an inspirational leader, and you lead by example.

  •  Given a larger business goal, you can facilitate ramping up an existing team or building a new team, including estimating the needed skills and team size, defining   processes, team structure, and means of collaboration. You have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to hit these goals.

  • You have shown the ability to make great hiring decisions as evidenced by the performance of engineers on your team, and you can retain and develop the best engineers.

  • You have demonstrated the capacity to make decisions for more than one engineering team or functional area showing that your judgment is fungible.

  •  You raise the quality bar of your team by creating a culture that ensures high levels of engineering and operational excellence.

  • You foster an environment of inclusiveness, psychological safety and ensure your team has fun while solving hard problems.

What We Offer:

  • A Great Place to work.

  • Equal opportunity employer

  • Fast-track growth opportunities.
