As a Mechanical Systems Design Lead, you will be a recognized technical expert, providing guidance and resolving problems. You will lead projects, define requirements, and collaborate with specialists. Your responsibilities will include strategy development, project definition, capability development, problem-solving, collaboration, leadership, people capability development, standards definition, and knowledge sharing. The role involves applying specialist technical knowledge to support the "run and maintain" activities of the business and mentoring junior professionals.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's/Master's/PhD in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering with experience.
  • U.S. Citizen is required to be considered for this opportunity.
Good to have:
  • Good interpersonal skills for teamwork and problem resolution.
  • Experience with composite materials or technical ceramics.
  • Experience with component design tools and practices.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with NPI project or product design.

Job Title: Mechanical Systems Design Lead

Working Pattern: Full time

Working location: Indianapolis, IN/Hybrid - 3 Office Days/Week)

Recognized as an authoritative source of technical expertise and advice in a local area within a business and viewed as a key member of the broader team of technical expertise by senior capability leadership. May be a specialist with depth and/or breadth of knowledge in their own discipline or field or may be a specialist in Rolls-Royce’s products and solutions and how they are differentiated from the competition. Generates business benefits through the application of specialist technical knowledge within their immediate area of expertise. Represents a critical resource to the “run and maintain” activity of a business, taking an active role in resolving current problems. Supports other technical specialists to advance knowledge in their capability area.

What you will be doing

  • Strategy: Supports the development and execution of the strategy with respect to their area of specialism; is regarded as a thought leader.
  • Project Definition: Leads the definition of capability projects including capturing requirements, creating proposals, achieving stakeholder approval, acquiring funding and aligning partner support.
  • Capability Development: Supports the development and application of new capabilities; leads capability development projects.
  • Problem Solving: Leads the resolution of new and emerging technical, compliance and business problems using analytical processes and professional judgement.
  • Collaboration: Proactively accesses internal and external networks of fellow specialists to further the understanding of the specialist subject; supports the implementation of strategic collaborative relationships.
  • Leadership: Provides technical direction to peers and more junior professionals, and technical leadership to teams and projects within their specialism.
  • People Capability: Supports the definition of skill and professional knowledge within their area of specialism; identifies, co-ordinates and delivers training; supports the development of other specialists; provides active mentoring.
  • Standards Definition: Ensures appropriate policies, standards and best practices are defined, shared and adopted
  • Knowledge Sharing: Leads the sharing of Best Practice; represents the area as an authority in their defined subject; provides concise justification for decisions; records and captures salient information in reports and systems

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 5+ years of experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 3+ years of experience, OR
  • PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • To be considered for this opportunity, you must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Good interpersonal skills, effective team working and problem resolution
  • Design or manufacturing experience working with composite materials and/or technical ceramics
  • Experience with component design methods, tools, and practices, including CAD (NX Unigraphics or equivalent), Teamcenter, Metaphase PDM, and Systems Engineering tools
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and tolerance stacks
  • New product introduction (NPI) project or equivalent product design, verification, and certification experience
  • High integrity, good work ethics, strong drive, with a customer focus
