This role is a strategic leadership position within the Global Product Management organization, responsible for market growth projections to drive portfolio-level strategy, governance, and investment optimization. The Senior Director, Portfolio Strategy will collaborate with Commercial leaders, R&D, Corporate Development, Strategic Planning, and Finance to ensure effective strategic planning. The ideal candidate possesses deep genomic product and market expertise, strategic thinking, analytical excellence, and influential leadership to manage a complex pipeline from strategy to execution. Responsibilities include defining strategic roadmaps, aligning project investments, providing insights for funding decisions, supporting scenario planning, overseeing market entry, and driving portfolio governance and analytics. The role also involves risk management, performance monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership, fostering innovation and development.

Position Summary: 

The Senior Director, Portfolio Strategy is a strategic and cross-functional leadership role within the Global Product Management organization. This individual will be responsible for market growth projections utilized to drive portfolio-level strategy, governance and investment optimizations, and strategic decision-making across our product portfolio. The role requires strong collaboration with other Commercial leaders, R&D, Corporate Development & Strategic Planning, Finance, and other functions to ensure effective strategic planning and decision making for Illumina’s portfolio strategy.  

The ideal candidate combines deep genomic product and market expertise, strategic thinking, analytical excellence, and influential leadership to shape and manage a complex, innovative pipeline driving strategy to execution 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

1. Portfolio Strategy and Alignment 

  • Define and maintain a long-term strategic roadmap. 

  • Partner with internal stakeholders to align project investments with Illumina’s strategies. 

  • Provide actionable insights to guide funding decisions and project prioritization. 

  • Support scenario planning, value-risk tradeoffs, and pipeline optimization. 

  • Lead team providing market segmentation, growth projections, and insights based on sophisticated models and analysis.  

  • Oversee Market Entry function and Customer Communications related to product lifecycle management, product changes, product quality and other related communications.   

2. Portfolio Governance and Analytics 

  • Partner on  portfolio governance processes, including approval committees and review boards. 

  • Drive continuous improvement of decision frameworks, performance criteria, and governance standards. 

  • Translate analytics into strategic insights that inform critical investment and trade-off decisions. 

  • Support and coordinate executive-level portfolio reviews and strategic planning forums. 

4. Risk Management and Decision Support 

  • Identify strategic risks across the portfolio and recommend mitigation strategies. 

  • Enable clear communication of risks and trade-offs at leadership levels. 

  • Support cross-functional alignment on prioritization and resource deployment. 

5. Performance Monitoring and Reporting 

  • Develop dashboards, analytics tools, and performance reporting for pipeline and portfolio status. 

  • Ensure data-driven decision-making with timely, accurate, and insightful reports. 

  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing through lessons learned. 

6. Stakeholder Engagement and Communication 

  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership across the company 

  • Facilitate collaboration across global/regional teams and diverse functional groups. 

  • Provide transparent and effective communication tailored to all levels of the organization. 

7. Team Leadership and Development 

  • Lead a high-performing team of strategy professionals, analysts, and project leaders. 

  • Cultivate a culture of innovation, inclusion, and high-impact delivery. 

  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to staff. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree strongly preferred (MBA or PhD) 

  • Minimum 20 years of relevant industry experience in commercial functions, strategy, portfolio management, or related fields. 

  • At least 12 years of people leadership experience.  

  • Proven track record in the genomics or biotech industry, with deep knowledge of strategic planning and portfolio management 

Strong analytical and financial acumen, including experience with forecasting, ROI analysis, and risk management.
