This Senior Software Engineer role focuses on maintaining, improving, and expanding core backend software components for Disney's Image Service, impacting the Hulu streaming platform. Responsibilities include collaborating with engineers to design solutions, building and managing code in AWS using Terraform, K8s, and Spinnaker, evaluating new technologies, creating documentation, and collaborating with stakeholders. The role requires experience with Java, Scala, Python, Kafka, and AWS services, along with strong problem-solving and communication skills. The engineer will analyze and improve system efficiency, scalability, and stability.
Must have:
  • 5+ years building internet-scale APIs or services
  • Experience in Java and Scala
  • AWS experience (ECS, S3, EC2, Lambda, CloudWatch)
  • Terraform or CloudFormation knowledge
  • Agile software development experience
Good to have:
  • Experience with Scala
  • Building scalable, fault-tolerant systems

The Product & Data Engineering team is responsible for end to end development for Disney’s world-class consumer-facing products, including streaming platforms Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, and digital products & experiences across ESPN, Marvel, Disney Studios, NatGeo, and ABC News. The team drives innovation at scale for millions of consumers around the world across Apple, Android, Smart TVs, game consoles, and the web, with our platforms powering core experiences like personalization, search, messaging and data.

Job Summary:

  • Maintain, improve, and expand core, backend software components for the Image Service

  • Collaborate with other Image Service engineers and external engineering teams to evaluate and design appropriate solutions to effectively meet Product requirements

  • Build and manage code in AWS using TerraForm, K8s, Spinnaker, and other CI/CD tools

  • Evaluate new or existing technologies and products for implementation, considering costs, usability, compatibility and scalability

  • Create technical documentation and runbooks for reference and reporting purposes

  • Use a mix of technologies including Java, Scala, Python, Kafka, and an array of AWS native services

  • Collaborate with other team members (including product owners, TPMs, and other stakeholders) to achieve product and business requirements

  • Conduct design and code reviews

  • Analyze and improve efficiency, scalability, and stability of various system resources

Required Education, Experience/Skills/Training:

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience building internet-scale API or services applications

  • Experience in Java and alternative JVM application development environments (Scala)

  • Familiarity with the AWS environment, including ECS (Docker), S3, EC2, Lambda, CloudWatch

  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code such as Terraform, CloudFormation

  • Understanding of software development fundamentals

  • Familiarity with writing unit, integration and functional tests

  • Familiarity integrating with service APIs and/or SDKs

  • Understanding of agile processes software team with version control & project management tools (e.g. Github, SVN, Jira, Basecamp)

  • Creative and inventive problem solving

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a team-focused approach towards software development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Scala

  • Experience building scalable, fault-tolerant, high-uptime systems

Required Education  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience


The hiring range for this position in LA/Santa Monica is $138,900- $186,200, and in Seattle/NYC is $145,400- $195,000, and in Bay Area is $152,100-$203,900 . The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
