Meet Our Team:
The Database Reliability Engineering (DRE) team owns the global, cloud-native (AWS) database infrastructure for the Max and HBO Max platforms. We are not a team of traditional “on-prem DBAs.” Deep knowledge of databases is a core competency for our engineers, but we take inspiration from the Reliability Engineering discipline, and we invest significantly in cloud automation. Our ideal candidate combines database skills with cloud knowledge, software engineering expertise, and operational excellence.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- You play a key contributor role in the domains of design, implementation, performance tuning, automation, and maintenance of highly available and scalable database systems using AWS database services. You have broad knowledge in each of these foundational areas.
- Build databases and related automation using software engineering best practices, database fundamentals and principles, and operational and engineering excellence best practices.
- Demonstrate passion for quality and productivity by use of efficient development techniques, standards, and guidelines.
- Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and apply tuning techniques to ensure optimal database efficiency and cost-effectiveness. You will own root cause analysis of database issues and production outages.
- You partner closely with service teams to optimize database queries, indexes, and schemas for data integrity, security, and compliance within the AWS ecosystem.
- You ensure uptime and performance at peak workflow hours by assisting with database capacity planning and scaling.
- You identify, troubleshoot, and resolve database functional and performance issues in production, reviewing logs, source code, and leveraging AWS and SRE operational monitoring tools. You will also work with other teams to avoid recurrence.
- Partner with SRE and service team engineers, to devise database solutions that satisfy service team needs.
- Collaborative Leader who helps other engineers and team members to be more productive, sharing knowledge and guides direction for key technical decisions. Provide mentoring to other DRE engineers.
- Participate in the growth of the DRE practice by sharing knowledge and lessons learned, continually improving best practices, and contributing to methods that will systematically advance DRE technical foundation and service capabilities.
- Effectively communicate through technical documentation, commented code, and interactions with stakeholders and adjacent teams.
- Contribute to building a vibrant workplace, where teams can thrive, and model the organization’s positive, supportive culture of respect and excellence.
- You offer enhancements to best practices, design and architecture improvements, and as feedback through code reviews to other engineers without continuous prompting or recurring encouragement.
What to Bring:
- 9 - 13 years of experience working with database software development and platform teams to design, build and implement highly scalable and resilient databases in a cloud-native environment.
- 7+ years of hands-on experience with cloud-native database technologies in a production environment and familiarity with AWS database services (Aurora, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, Keyspaces).
- Expertise with CI/CD pipelines, repeatable self-serve gitops-based deployments, and infrastructure-as-code technologies (CloudFormation, Terraform) and processes.
- Experience with elements of our greater service tech stack, including containerized Kubernetes-based microservice architectures, performance testing platform and tools, JS, APMs, messaging services, API gateways.
