About the job:
The Hardware Operations team at Google is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and deploying the physical infrastructure behind the company's search technology. As a Data Center Technician, you will be involved in the deployment and maintenance of Google's advanced Data Center Server and Network Infrastructure. You will also participate in or lead local project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans. This role requires a strong understanding of operating systems, computer/server hardware, and networking protocols. You will be responsible for deploying and operating new data center infrastructure across projects or functions, troubleshooting and diagnosing straightforward issues with equipment or infrastructure, and maintaining the security and integrity of data. You will also participate in the disassembly of equipment that has reached its end-of-life, repair and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, or infrastructure, and apply the resources needed to resolve identified issues. This position offers a great introduction to the wider engineering world at Google, with opportunities to develop within Hardware Operations or move towards software development, engineering, networking operations, or project management groups.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols
  • Ability to lift/move 50lb (23kg) of equipment
  • Ability to exert yourself physically over extended periods of time
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including weekends, holidays, and on shift-based schedule
  • Ability to communicate in English fluently
Good to have:
  • Certified in online Google IT Support Professional program
  • 2 years of experience diagnosing and troubleshooting operating systems, computer/server hardware, or networking protocols
  • Experience working within a data center or network operation center environment
  • Ability to collaborate and partner with teams to overcome challenges
  • Ability to adapt to changes in a dynamic work environment

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols.
  • Ability to lift/move 50lb (23kg) of equipment and ability to exert yourself physically over extended periods of time, including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing/pulling and lifting.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours, including working weekends, holidays and on shift-based schedule as required.
  • Ability to communicate in English fluently to support client relationships in the region.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certified in online Google IT Support Professional program.
  • 2 years of experience diagnosing and troubleshooting one of the following: operating systems and computer/server hardware or networking protocols.
  • Experience working within a data center or network operation center environment.
  • Ability to collaborate and partner with teams to overcome challenges.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in a dynamic work environment.

The Hardware Operations team is responsible for monitoring, maintaining and deploying the state-of-the-art physical infrastructure behind Google's powerful search technology. As a Data Center Technician, you'll deploy and maintain Google's advanced Data Center Server and Network Infrastructure. You'll also participate in or lead local project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans.

In this role, duties range from the physical deployment of data center-related technology to working closely with the various stakeholders. It will fall to you to ensure that our goals, missions and projects are successfully delivered, and, more importantly, that they are repeatable across our global array of data centers. This position offers a great introduction to the wider engineering world at Google. Depending of your area of interest, capabilities, and geographical mobility, you will have the opportunity to develop either within Hardware Operations or move towards software development, engineering, networking operations or our project management groups.

The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical and HVAC systems in the world. We are a diverse, upbeat, creative, team-oriented group of engineers committed to building and operating powerful data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy and operate new data center infrastructure across projects or functions.
  • Report issues and follow data center procedures to troubleshoot and diagnose straightforward issues with equipment or infrastructure as they arise, and applying the resources needed to resolve identified issues.
  • Maintain the security and integrity of data, track various forms of media to check for standard data security issues (e.g., data was not properly erased) handled in accordance with Google security standards.
  • Disassemble specific equipment that has reached its end-of-life via part replacement or maintenance, in a team setting.
  • Repair, fix, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment, servers, machines, or infrastructure based on identified issues with defined solutions and limited guidance.
