Skydance Animation seeks a Visual Development Environment Designer to create environmental designs, drawings, models, floor plans, and set dressing for their sixth animated feature film. Responsibilities include collaborating on project vision, brainstorming creative ideas, generating 2D and 3D visual development assets (sketches, drawings, models), conducting research, creating presentations, iterating on designs, meeting deadlines, and communicating effectively. The ideal candidate has 3+ years of commercial film/show design experience, proficiency in Blender and Photoshop, strong storytelling skills, and the ability to work collaboratively. The role requires advanced knowledge of visual storytelling and art department functions, including set design and environment creation.

Skydance Animation is seeking a Visual Development Environment Designer to generate environmental designs, drawings, models, floor plans, and set dressing, while ensuring story themes, style, and quality of show is met for our sixth animated feature film.

If you are an artist that enjoys conceptualizing, developing, and finding worlds this is the job for you!

Responsibilities

    • Work as part of a team to contribute to the vision for the project
    • Brainstorm inventive ideas that support the storytelling; to add depth, humor, emotion and resonance to visual concepts
    • Create Environments for project 2D concepts and/or 3D vis dev models
    • Generate work in the form of sketches and (drawings, set designs, isometric drawings, and vis dev models)
    • Perform research that will inform the design of the work
    • Create presentation materials as needed
    • Bring creative solutions, receive feedback well, and be able to iterate on creative ideas
    • Meet scheduling deadlines
    • Proactively communicate production issues/questions/concerns
    • Communicate progress of work to the Production Designer and Production staff
    • Make any changes or revisions and re-submit to Production Designer for approval
    • If applicable, make special shadow and color indications

Requirements

    • 3+ years of design experience on commercial film/show
    • Knowledge of Blender a HUGE plus
    • Sound knowledge of story structure, character development, staging, and pacing
    • A comprehensive understanding of both visual storytelling and how an art department functions
    • Advanced knowledge of Photoshop
    • Ability to create action & humor expressed through drawing
    • Ability to work collaboratively, communicate clearly, present work, be a team-player
    • Demonstrated sense of composition and story-telling
    • Superior ability to represent ideas visually and to suggest alternate concepts
    • Skill at expressing verbal descriptions in an artistic way
    • Knowledge of anatomy
    • Sense of entertainment and humor
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision both independently or collaborating within a group
    • Sense of humor and resilience in the face of shifting priorities and demands
    • Requirement to be, or become, a member in good standing of the Animation Guild (Local 839) 
The annual salary range for this position in Los Angeles, CA is $2,126.40 – $4,000wk.  The salary offered may vary based on the candidate’s location, qualifications, experience and relevant expertise, among other factors.  The range indicated is for base salary only and does not reflect the total compensation package, including bonus, benefits, etc.
