A Bit About Us

Gamemode One was founded 6 years ago to do things right in the Minecraft gaming space - especially doing right by our staff, and right by our players. We care deeply about our vibrant company culture, which enables us all to do our best work. We are looking to scale to meet the full potential of the opportunities available to us, while continuing to prioritize staff-wellbeing, and making excellent games.

The Opportunity

In our bold and supportive organization, you’ll be leveraging your artistic skills, creating a variety of assets and implementing them into Minecraft Bedrock. You’ll play an important role in our upcoming projects and contribute to new entries in our growing and exciting roster of projects. You’ll be supporting art strategy, including planning and prototyping for upcoming projects and contributing to the design of art-heavy systems, such as character customization and asset variance.

You’ll bring your knowledge of Minecraft art standards and learn our art processes, vision, and goals. You will support the alignment of art and gameplay, ensuring that our games not only function smoothly but also deliver a visually captivating experience to our players.

What we mean when we say ‘experienced’

This role is listed at an experience level of “experienced”. We know that this can mean something different across employers. For us, this means you should have ample experience in Minecraft art such as textures and 3D modelling. This may be a mix of personal and professional experience. If you have ample art experience outside of Minecraft, learning quickly and eagerly would be necessary - and having experience across similar low poly styles would help. We are looking for someone who will be confident working on the bulk of art of a project. You will heavily impact the art direction of each project. This is likely not the role for you if it would be your first-ever art job, or you are seeking a role with a large focus on mentorship.

Within 1 month, you’ll…

  • Connect with your peers and coworkers
  • Become comfortable with our pipeline, tools, philosophy, and game development methods using Minecraft
  • Play some of our games and get acquainted with our approach to art and the critical role it plays in our content
  • Partake in the kick-off of your first blockbuster IP, contributing with asset prototyping
  • Understand the climate Gamemode One is in, including our company structure and culture, and our present projects and future goals

Within 3 months, you’ll…

  • Contribute to pre-production planning and asset prototyping for our next project
  • Support the elaboration of artifacts such as mood boards and style guides for current projects
  • Create your first hero art assets, demonstrating an understanding of our art cleanliness, organization, and quality standards
  • Help identify and diagnose inefficiencies in our art workflows
  • Show a deepening cultural understanding and values alignment by leveraging curiosity and initiative in learning about the company and our players

Within 6 months, you’ll…

  • Maintain a strong visual identity within our games
  • Play an active role in mentoring new artists through our current art processes
  • Collaborate closely with art and tech teams to achieve efficient and seamless art integration into our games
  • Contribute ideas to resolve inefficiencies and enhance art workflows

Within 12 months, you’ll…

  • Actively contribute to pushing the boundaries of innovation in art within the Minecraft medium.
  • Demonstrate confidence and initiative in exploring new techniques and approaches to enhance the visual impact of our games
  • Mentor and support junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous growth and collaboration in the art team
  • Contribute to discussions about art direction and its alignment with project goals and player expectations

Why our job descriptions look like this

Our job descriptions look different than the average, and that’s on purpose! We find the normal approach to be far too prescriptive. Defining explicit qualifications and requirements would be us defining how you should have acquired a certain skillset. What these generally achieve is intimidating those who don’t fit the mold to not apply. That’s not our style. To be inclusive and clear, we take a more descriptive approach. Read through the opportunity, and the description of the work you’ll be doing. Decide for yourself if the work excites you, and is something that you are able to rise to the challenge of.

Benefits

  • Unlimited paid time off
  • Flexible hybrid schedule
  • Health Spending Account of $3000/year
  • Charitable matching of $2000/year
  • Investment in professional development
  • Access to the benefits above without a probationary period
  • Opportunity to explore fully paid relocation to work with us in Halifax, Canada
