Job Description

The Technical Designer at Ylands EDU will bridge game design and implementation, ensuring seamless gameplay mechanics and systems. Responsibilities include prototyping and implementing core gameplay mechanics using scripting and visual tools, collaborating with designers and programmers to translate concepts into functional in-game systems, defining game rules and player behaviors, optimizing gameplay features, and supporting the development and maintenance of design tools. The role requires experience in technical design within gaming or educational products, familiarity with game engines (Unity), strong problem-solving skills, and proficiency in English. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for technical and gameplay details and a passion for UX and workflow optimization.

Ylands EDU is a Czech educational platform that encourages creativity and teaches computer science in a fun, engaging way. It offers a safe environment where students can explore, create, and build their own small game projects. Teachers can easily design custom interactive lessons, making the learning experience both flexible and tailored. Ylands EDU helps students develop the tools they need to succeed in today’s digital world.

Job Description

As a Technical Designer, your role bridges game design and implementation, ensuring that gameplay mechanics, systems, and tools function seamlessly within the game. You will collaborate closely with designers, programmers, and artists to prototype, refine, and integrate interactive features, leveraging both scripting and visual tools to bring the game’s vision to life.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Gameplay systems & implementation
  • Support the design, prototyping, and implementation of core gameplay mechanics, ensuring smooth integration within the game
  • Utilize scripting and visual tools to implement, refine, and balance gameplay elements
  • Work closely with designers and programmers to translate creative concepts into functional in-game systems
  • Assist in defining game rules, interactions, and player behaviors, ensuring clarity and consistency
  • Optimize and troubleshoot gameplay features based on feedback and technical constraints

Tools & Workflow Support

  • Support the development and maintenance of design tools and workflows to streamline the team’s productivity
  • Assist in improving editor usability and UX, ensuring an efficient design pipeline
  • Document workflows and best practices to support the wider team’s use of tools and systems

Skills & Competencies

  • Basic experience with game scripting
  • Understanding of game design principles and implementation techniques
  • Familiarity with game engines and editors (Unity)
  • Problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for technical and gameplay details
  • Interest in UX, workflow improvements, and design tool optimization
  • Communication and collaboration skills, working effectively with designers, programmers, and QA

Growth & Development

  • Continue refining your technical and design skills; deepen your understanding of game systems and scripting
  • Stay informed on best practices in technical design; explore new methods for efficiency and implementation
  • Work closely with the team to enhance tools, workflows, and game features; ensure smooth and efficient development

Requirements

  • Experience in a technical design role (2+ years preferred), ideally in gaming or educational products
  • Familiarity with game design workflows and implementation
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in English (B2/C1)
