Steer Studios is seeking a Windows and Linux System Administrator. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining and improving our Windows and Linux server environments, ensuring system stability, security, and performance. This role involves managing server infrastructure, automating routine tasks, troubleshooting system issues, and collaborating with other IT teams to support business objectives. Hands-on experience with these technologies will be preferred over experience working with external service providers. Candidates with prior technical roles in system administration and DevOps will be highly preferred.
This position is within a video game production environment, where infrastructure needs can evolve rapidly based on development and production requirements. Candidates should be adaptable, capable of responding to changing priorities, and proactive in optimizing IT systems to support game development teams effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
• Install, configure, and maintain Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) and Linux distributions (Ubuntu, CentOS, RHEL, Debian, etc.).
• Perform system administration tasks such as patch management, security hardening, and performance tuning.
• Monitor system performance and ensure high availability of IT infrastructure.
• Implement and maintain backup and disaster recovery solutions.
• Automate system administration tasks using PowerShell, Bash, Batch files, or Python.
• Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and other Windows-based services.
• Administer Linux-based services such as Apache/Nginx, MySQL/MariaDB, Postfix, and SSH.
• Troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues across Windows and Linux environments.
• Maintain and improve system security through access controls, firewall configurations, and vulnerability patching.
• Work extensively with virtualization technologies, including VMware, Nutanix, and Hyper-V.
• Manage Windows and Linux-based NAS storage systems, ensuring reliability, security, and efficient resource allocation.
• Document system configurations, standard operating procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
• Collaborate with development, security, and network teams to enhance IT services.
• Adapt to evolving IT requirements driven by game development workflows, ensuring stability and efficiency in a fast-paced production environment.
Qualifications & Key Skills:
• 4-8 years of experience in Windows and Linux system administration.
• Strong knowledge of Windows Server administration (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, GPO).
• Proficiency in Linux administration, including package management, shell scripting, and system monitoring.
• Extensive hands-on experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware, Nutanix, and Hyper-V.
• Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with Windows and Linux-based NAS storage solutions.
• Familiarity with configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
• Understanding networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, firewall rules, VPNs).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills in a primarily English-speaking environment.
• Candidates with direct hands-on experience in these areas will be prioritized over those whose experience is primarily with managing third-party service providers.
• Proficiency in at least one of PowerShell, Bash, Batch files, or Python for automating system administration tasks is required.
• Experience in technical roles such as system administration and DevOps will be preferred.
