Job Description

The Material Lab Inspector will play a pivotal role in the research, testing, and evaluation of materials used in the production of our autonomous surface vessels. This individual will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to ensure that all materials meet the strict standards required for performance, durability, and compliance with industry regulations. The role will involve hands-on inspection, testing, and documentation of materials, as well as recommending improvements in material processes.
Must have:
  • Conduct thorough testing of materials, including metals, composites, and coatings, using a variety of standard and advanced testing methods.
  • Inspect raw materials, in-process components, and final products to ensure compliance with engineering specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of material tests, inspection results, and findings. Prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Work closely with engineers, product designers, and quality assurance teams to communicate material issues, identify root causes of material defects, and suggest improvements.
  • Ensure all materials and processes comply with DoD specifications, military standards (MIL-STD), and other relevant industry guidelines.
  • Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements to material handling, testing, and inspection processes to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Ensure all testing and inspection procedures are conducted safely, in compliance with company policies, OSHA standards, and any other relevant regulations.
  • Assist in managing and tracking material inventory, ensuring the proper storage, labeling, and handling of materials used in vessel production.

Job Details

Key Responsibilities:

  • Material Testing: Conduct thorough testing of materials, including metals, composites, and coatings, using a variety of standard and advanced testing methods (e.g., tensile strength, hardness testing, corrosion resistance, fatigue testing, etc.).
  • Inspection: Inspect raw materials, in-process components, and final products to ensure compliance with engineering specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of material tests, inspection results, and findings. Prepare comprehensive reports that outline material performance, testing protocols, and any deviations from expected results.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, product designers, and quality assurance teams to communicate material issues, identify root causes of material defects, and suggest improvements.
  • Compliance: Ensure all materials and processes comply with DoD specifications, military standards (MIL-STD), and other relevant industry guidelines.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements to material handling, testing, and inspection processes to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Safety: Ensure all testing and inspection procedures are conducted safely, in compliance with company policies, OSHA standards, and any other relevant regulations.
  • Inventory Management: Assist in managing and tracking material inventory, ensuring the proper storage, labeling, and handling of materials used in vessel production.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field; or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience:
  • 2+ years of experience in material testing, inspection, or quality control in a manufacturing or R&D environment, preferably related to defense, aerospace, or marine industries.
  • Familiarity with DoD specifications and military standards is a plus.
  • Experience with material testing equipment and lab instrumentation (e.g., hardness testers, tensile testers, microscopes, etc.).
  • Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of material properties, including metals, composites, and polymers.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively document and report findings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and data management systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while being proactive and self- driven.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced startup environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time, up to 12 hours/day
  • Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 20 lbs.
  • The ability to carry 20 lbs. up and down stairs
  • Ability to work outside for an extended period of time
  • Frequently and repetitively, bend, lift and reach to install vehicle parts of varying size and weight overhead, accurately and in allotted timeframes
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours/day, including over varied and uneven terrain
  • Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time, including up to 12 hours/day
  • Climb and maintain balance on ladders, platforms, or other high structures
  • Ability to find issues in a work process and be alert to safety signals using sight, touch, and hearing
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and manipulate tooling and mechanically fasten bolts within required cycle time
  • Exposures to hazardous materials and ability to follow waste handling/disposal procedures
  • Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, gloves and adhering to prescribed safety rules and guidelines
