About the Team
Join ByteDance’s database development team, where you’ll build and own cutting-edge database products supporting Bytedance’s global infrastructure. Our diverse portfolio includes relational databases, distributed caches, key-value stores, document databases, graph databases, wide-column stores, search engines, and multi-model databases. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to enhance these services in a cloud-native environment, embracing a culture of intellectual curiosity, self-direction, and problem-solving. We are looking for candidates to work in an open, agile, and highly collaborative environment in the following areas:
- Query Processing, including query execution, query optimization, system catalog, database schema management, etc.
- Distributed Processing, including distributed transactions, distributed lock management, logging/recovery, replication, intra-cluster communication etc.
- Distributed Storage including blob storage, key-value stores such as rocksdb, ETCD or Zookeeper etc.
- Cluster and system management including database scale out, high availability, backup/restore, database monitoring, observability and serviceability frameworks and tools including telemetry collection, performance and crash diagnostics etc.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop enterprise-level relational database products, aiming to create industry-leading OLTP/OLAP standardized solutions.
- Research and implement cloud-native technologies in the database domain.
- Continuously optimize system stability, performance, cost, availability, scalability, and maintainability.
- Understand and address specific database requirements for different business scenarios.
- Stay updated on industry advancements, explore new technologies, and apply them to improve relational database products.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS or a higher degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other related fields
- 3+ years of backend engineering experience in at least one C/C++/Go/Python, with a strong foundation in algorithms and data structures. High standards for engineering quality and a focus on performance are essential.
- Familiarity with the architecture of relational DBMS and its design principles.
- Working experience in at least one database engine development such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, PolarDB, Spanner etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in middleware, HA, replication, backup and recovery etc. particularly distributed systems with high concurrency.
- Working experience related to SQL engine or storage engine in backup and recovery, high availability area, particularly MySQL.

Job Information
【For Pay Transparency】Compensation Description (Annually)The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $145000 - $355000 annually.
Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
Benefits may vary depending on the nature of employment and the country work location. Employees have day one access to medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) savings plan with company match, paid parental leave, short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, wellbeing benefits, among others. Employees also receive 10 paid holidays per year, 10 paid sick days per year and 17 days of Paid Personal Time (prorated upon hire with increasing accruals by tenure).
