Job Description

The Media Processing team seeks a Software Engineer II to develop and maintain backend systems for scalable, reliable, high-performing media workflows. Responsibilities include building and maintaining scalable backend services using modern languages, APIs supporting media workflows, working with event-based systems, utilizing AWS for infrastructure reliability, writing unit tests, participating in the full software development lifecycle, and troubleshooting technical challenges. This role requires collaboration with the engineering team to design and implement robust services and infrastructure using modern programming languages and cloud technologies.
Must have:
  • 3+ years backend programming experience (Java, Kotlin, Go, Scala)
  • Cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • API and backend service development
  • Unit testing and code reviews
  • AWS infrastructure maintenance
Good to have:
  • Scala frameworks (ZIO, Akka)
  • NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, Redis, ScyllaDB)
  • Observability tools (Datadog, New Relic, Honeycomb)
  • Docker, Kubernetes experience

Media Engineering is an innovative, collaborative organization that builds the software and systems that prepare media content and metadata for the Disney Streaming platform - providing the best possible playback experience to our viewers. Media Engineering handles audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our stack.

The Media Processing team is seeking a Software Engineer II to contribute to the development and maintenance of backend systems that ensure scalable, reliable, and high-performing media workflows. This role involves collaborating with the engineering team to design and implement robust services and infrastructure using modern programming languages and cloud technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain scalable backend services using modern programming languages.
  • Build and maintain APIs and backend services to support media workflows.
  • Work with event-based systems
  • Utilize AWS to maintain infrastructure and ensure service reliability.
  • Write unit tests and contribute to code reviews to maintain high-quality code standards.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from design to deployment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges under the guidance of senior engineers.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in one or more backend programming languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Go, Scala).
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Familiarity with building and maintaining APIs and backend services.

Bonus Skills:

  • Exposure to Scala frameworks (e.g., ZIO, Akka).
  • Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., DynamoDB, Redis, ScyllaDB).
  • Knowledge of observability tools (e.g., Datadog, New Relic, Honeycomb).
  • Basic understanding of containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Enthusiasm for solving problems and learning new technologies in a dynamic environment.


The hiring range for this position in New York City, NY is $120,300.00 to $161,300.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
