Job Description

The Technical Art Director will define and implement technical art pipelines for world-building, procedural generation, and asset optimization using Unreal Engine 5 and Houdini. Responsibilities include developing and optimizing real-time rendering workflows (shaders, materials, lighting, VFX), collaborating with Art Directors, engineers, and designers, establishing best practices for asset optimization and memory management, leading the creation of procedural tools, and mentoring the technical art team. The ideal candidate will have 12+ years of experience in AAA open-world game development, deep Unreal Engine 5 expertise, strong Houdini experience, and proven ability to lead and mentor technical art teams. The role requires strong problem-solving skills, balancing technical constraints with artistic goals. Hybrid work arrangement (minimum 3 days in office).

Job Details

Responsabilités / Responsibilities:

  • Définir et mettre en œuvre des pipelines artistiques techniques pour la création de mondes, la génération procédurale et l'optimisation des actifs en utilisant Unreal Engine 5 et Houdini.

  • Développer et optimiser les flux de travail de rendu en temps réel, y compris les shaders, les matériaux, l'éclairage et les effets visuels (VFX), en garantissant à la fois la qualité visuelle et l'efficacité des performances.

  • Collaborer étroitement avec le directeur artistique, les équipes d'ingénierie et de conception pour assurer une intégration harmonieuse de la vision artistique et de l'exécution technique.

  • Établir les meilleures pratiques pour l'optimisation des actifs, le streaming, les niveaux de détail (LOD) et la gestion de la mémoire afin de maintenir un haut niveau de performance sur toutes les plateformes.

  • Diriger la création d'outils procéduraux pour aider les artistes à générer efficacement des environnements à grande échelle.

  • Évaluer et intégrer des outils avancés et des techniques d'automatisation pour améliorer la création de contenu et la vitesse d'itération

  • Guider et encadrer l'équipe artistique technique, en favorisant la collaboration avec les ingénieurs et les artistes pour développer des flux de travail robustes.

  • Travailler avec les partenaires de co-développement, en veillant à ce que les normes techniques soient respectées et que les actifs s'intègrent parfaitement.

  • Collaborate with the Art Director, Engineering, and Design teams to ensure a seamless integration of artistic vision and technical execution.

  • Establish best practices for asset optimization, streaming, LODs, and memory management to maintain a high level of performance across platforms.

  • Lead the creation of procedural tools to assist artists in generating large-scale environments efficiently.

  • Evaluate and integrate advanced tools and automation techniques to enhance content creation and iteration speed.

  • Guide and mentor the technical art team, fostering collaboration with engineers and artists to develop robust workflows.

  • Work with co-development partners, ensuring technical standards are met and assets integrate seamlessly.

Qualifications

Exigences de base :

  • 12+ years of experience in the video game industry, with a focus on AAA open-world game development.

  • Technical proficiency in real-time rendering, asset streaming, and large-scale world-building.

  • Proven ability to develop and optimize asset pipelines, including tools for procedural generation, animation, and VFX.

  • Experience leading and mentoring technical art teams in a collaborative production environment.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance technical constraints and artistic goals.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with photogrammetry workflows, high-fidelity asset pipelines, and advanced material/shader techniques.

  • Expertise in pipeline automation and scripting (Python, C++, or similar) to improve content workflows.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with experience working in cross-disciplinary teams.

  • Passion for pushing the boundaries of real-time graphics and large-scale environment creation.

Additional Requirements:

  • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the NBCU Montreal office a minimum of three days per week.
