What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

Our Design Platform team is in the early stages of developing our backend design manipulation capabilities. We are seeking to hire an individual who can assist in evolving, scaling, and supporting this essential function. You will collaborate with our editing teams to comprehend Canva's editor's features while also engaging with our stakeholders to create a comprehensive suite of design editing APIs tailored for their needs.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Working with our Editing teams to understand the Editor’s capabilities and which ones translate to non-browser clients;
  • Working closely with our Generative AI teams to unlock their AI-powered designing use cases;
  • Collaborating with our Ecosystems teams to unlock their integration use cases;
  • Working with others in your team to define the most pragmatic set of capabilities to develop first;
  • Designing and implementing new APIs that interact with the Editor.

You're probably a match if

  • Experience working with Java and AWS
  • Experience with distributed systems (monitoring and supporting)
  • Experience designing APIs
  • Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns
  • Working collaboratively with team members and communicating effectively
  • You will have the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds and with different professional and personal needs.
  • Your excellent written and verbal communication skills will enable you to manage stakeholders and communicate effectively across other groups.
  • You will thriving in and promoting Canva’s values, no-blame mentality, and inclusive culture.


About the team

The Editing Platform group supports the editor through a secure, performant, reliable, and scalable platform. Additionally, one of the new capabilities we are adding to the platform is a rich set of Design Editing APIs, allowing non-browser clients (AI and other processes) to interact with Designs; further expanding our integration potential.
