The New York Times is seeking an iOS Engineer to join their Games mobile team. As part of a collaborative team, you'll contribute to the development of new features for the NYT Games app using Swift and SwiftUI. The role involves working closely with product, PMO, design, data, QA, and other engineers to guide product development and ensure the app's stability. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and testing new features, contributing to architectural decisions, and ensuring adherence to Swift development standards. This hybrid role is based in NYC headquarters, requiring two days of in-office presence per week.
Must have:
  • 2+ years iOS Engineer experience
  • 2+ years Swift experience
  • Experience with unit tests, networking, data persistence, and UI
  • Understanding of Swift UI and iOS design patterns
  • Experience with memory management and multi-threading
  • Ability to translate product goals into shippable code
Good to have:
  • Exposure to hybrid development
  • Previous games experience or interest in NYT Games product

About the Role:

The New York Times is looking for an iOS Engineer to join the Games mobile team. You'll join a team with native mobile engineers, QA, product, project, data, and design and report to the Games App Mobile Engineering Manager.

The app is written mostly in Swift and uses SwiftUI for new feature development.

This is a hybrid role based in our NYC headquarters. You could typically expect to come into the office two days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and test new features using Swift
  • Work with product, PMO, design, data, QA, and other engineers to guide product development
  • Contribute to app architectural decisions, technical roadmap and timeline estimations
  • Participate in technical discussions with backend developers and other owners of internal/external dependencies
  • Promote standards in Swift development, and engage with the community of iOS developers at the Times
  • Ensure app stability by writing quality code and partnering with the QA team to test and fix bugs
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years full time experience as an iOS Engineer
  • 2+ years of iOS Swift experience, including writing unit tests, networking, data persistence and UI
  • Demonstrated understanding of Swift UI and iOS design patterns, memory management and multi-threading
  • Experience translating product goals into quality shippable code

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Exposure to hybrid development
  • Previous games experience or demonstrated interest in the NYT Games product

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$104,000$130,000 USD
