Senior Backend Developer

Sulake is a social entertainment company focused on providing safe and fun online service for self-expression. Our mission is to enable our users to meet new people, make friends and give them a place to create and share content in enticing virtual surroundings. We make online web and mobile based games, and we are good at it! Currently, we’re both operating and developing two games: Hotel Hideaway and Habbo. Hotel Hideaway is a social online role playing game for young adults and Habbo is famous for being one of the world's oldest and most popular social hangouts for teens.

Sulake is part of Azerion, a Dutch-based international gaming company in the media and entertainment business. Together we are a diverse group of various media and technology brands.

We are currently seeking a highly experienced Senior Backend Software Developer with years of expertise in Java to join our Habbo team in Finland or Netherlands (Hybrid). You will have a crucial role in planning, developing and implementing new features to our games and troubleshoot issues across multiple services. 

The experience & skills we expect you to have:

• Years of proven track record in a similar senior role 
• Extensive experience working with Java
• Strong technical skills

• OO design
• Relational databases
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues
• Strong collaboration and communication skills (in English) to work effectively within a team
• Experience with mentoring/guiding junior developers 

Following areas are considered as plusses:

• Experience in concurrent programming via Java
• Experience in NIO programming via Java
• Performance tuning of Java applications including but not limited to GC profiling, fixing memory leaks, JVM tuning.
• Solving deadlocks and performance issues in Java applications.
• Database access profiling and optimisation.
• Writing code with Java 8 API, in particular CompletableFuture.
• Writing database schemas for MySQL database.
• Frameworks included Spring, Hibernate, actors, Netty.
• Passion for gaming

You write unit tests for the code you produce, possibly even before writing the code itself. Any experience of agile practices is a plus, and at least you believe in the benefits of developing in short, iterative cycles.
